W musical hits jackpot Steakhouse , a country-western musical written by ASU graduate student H. Mark Cullimore played here Oct. 4-7 and at the Big Show during Homecoming. The musical became ASU's entry in the 1984-85 American College Theatre Festival XVII which was held in El Paso on Nov. 30. The play then went on to the Regional Festival in Fort Worth and was considered for selection to the national ACTF XVII in Washington D.C. Cullimore was awarded two indi- vidual national playwriting awards for his musical: The ASCAP College Musical Theatre Award for the best musical production in the ACTF, and the David Library ofthe American Revolution Award. Accompanying these prestigious awards were cash awards of 341500 from the American Society of Com- posers, and 5142000 that came with the David Library of the American Revo- lution award. Both were such an honor, espe- cially the David Library, Cullimore said. Cullimore wrote the play, its lyrics and songs, and plays Roy Williams, the owner of the Steakhouse. The original Roy and Bobbie Wil- liams Steakhouse is set in the Texas Hill Country town of Atne, and the play involves the everyday problems that arise. Steakhouse is about people and their dreams-dreams that are hard to kill, Cullimore said. Other Cast members were Calvin Wimmer who plays the Williams' son Bubba, Kaye McDougall as Bobbie Williams, Jay B. Jones as Ronny, Libba Carver as Molly, M. Caroline Canfield as Lou, Shelly Roberts as Suzie, Robyn Harlin as Karen, and Ray Bacon as Mr. Compton. Five cast members were nominated forthe Irene Ryan Scholarship, a regional and national award for individual performances. The nominees for the award are Jay Jones, Josh Jones, Carver, Bacon, and McDougall. I7
