Amnlemenll lldllor C'est bon. That's all the comment need- ed to describe the San Angelo College Theatre production ol Moliere's The Imaginary ln- valid. From its French programs to its elegantly costumed players, the Don Irwin-directed in-the round farce is the most corn- plelely delightful evening of the- ater available in San Angelo in a month of 16th century Sun- days. AND EVEN more rare for San Angelo, The Imaginary In- valid played in SAC's Student Center Theater before a sold-out house '1'hursday night - with the prospect of two more sellouts to go. Moliere's satire remains bit- ing, his wit quick and his comic lines broad and true And Inv- in's collection of collegians do, them Iull justice, to the accom- paniment of music and the diges- tion ot between-the-acts candy- tastetully served to the ladies of the audience by the ladies of the cast. Bruce Smith, sporting a short growth of gray heard and a long suit of talent, was completely in command in the title role of Argan - who's something of a family tyrant and everything ol a hypochondriac. Smith, the most artful mugger seen this year. fitted the role like a palr of silk brltches. Using broad gestures, comic inflec- tions and an uncanny sense of timing, Smith managed to bring down the capacity house time and again when he either roared with displeasure or sighed of doom. AT ONCE trying to do best for her master and undermine his plans, Daphne l-lopson as Toinette, the maid, wielded a firm feather dustei- in keeping the wheels of plot well oiled and turning. At her best when matched with Smith in a number of nose-to-nose shouting bouts, Miss Hopson was well-nigh letter perfect. Kay Kennemer, with a gift lor exaggeration to match the spirit of the play, emphasized the two-faced character of Ar- gan's scheming second wife with winking facial asides to the audience. Brenda Watson as Argan's daughter Angelique and Willie Hiller as her lover Cleante per- formed admirably in the play's only straight roles, and Dickie Dixon was the soul of reason as Argan's brother, trying ln persuade him to discard his reliance on doctors and drugs and recognize the vagaries ol' his wife. AND. AS USUAL in one ol' Irwin's SAC productions, all the minor roles showed the re- sults nt' careful direction. Charles Webb very nearly stopped the show as Argan's choice of a son-in-law: Kerry Richards won gales of laugh- ter as Argan's righteousiy-im dignant. spurned doctorg .lean Yates was A Winsome second daughter: and Rue Moore, El- ton Carroll and Pat Henderson all brought their roles to life. WITH THE intimacy of the- ater in the round to start with, Irwin and his well-schooled players make The Imaginary Invalid what theater should be - thoroughly enjoyable to all the senses. ' And with the likes ol Bruce Smith around, there's an air of professionalism that's hard to believe. - ' 'S' X V 0' V .I 'Q V N 'M A ' 1 N-gr Q ...iv ,L ,g . N - , . ON THE MOVE-Waiting is the official police escort as the Legislators board the buses to continue their whirlwind visit of the college and San L e g is I a to rs View College The San Angelo College Development Commit- tee and the business men hosts to visiting legislators this week should take a bow. The idea of bringing the members of the legislature here to see for them- selves what San Angelo College is like was a sound one. Open and above-board manner of the presenta- tion of SAC's case for four-year state-supported status cannot fail to be noted by the legislators as a refreshing change. This is not the lobbying of the smoke-filled rooms and Austin partying. This is not an insult to the legislators' intelligence. As anyone who knows conditions around a state legislative session can tell you, legislators' lives can - and often do - become a continuing nightmare. This special interest group and that, this civic dele- gation and another is pulling and hauling at them at all hours of the day and night. They become ac- customed, if they are legislators, to being called out of committee meetings, called off the floor of the chamber, possibly when important matters are under discussion. And as they see dozens of special pleaders week in and week out throughout the session, they are hammered with the same stories, the same argu- ments, the same salesmanship ad infinitum. Under- standably they become a bit bleary-eyed by the end of the session. The development committee is trying a new ap- proach, and it's more efficient, more business-like, more reasonable. The entire cost is being borne by the development committee, which gets its funds from the San Angelo business and civic interests who are seeking to help SAC achieve four-year status. And economically speaking it will be cheaper. A, delegation of special pleaders cannot be sent to Austin every other week to present and re-present the case for SAC without a substantial outlay of money. And still many of the legislators would never have a vision of the college, the town, and the phob- lem they were being told about. Visual aids are tops in education. This way the legislators see for themselves, have an opportunity to ask questions and get answers. This way the legislators' - and everybody else's - time, energy and nerves are conserved. ,.g..... In a nutshell, that sums up the SAC Rams' 9-6 upset at the hands of the Cisco junior College Wrang- lers. Fumbles, missed signals, bad timing and bad hand- offs stalled the Ram attack all night long. Only twice did SAC flash a consistent attack. SAC's smdy defense nailed the Wranglers deep in their own territory. The Rams had five good scoring opportunities they couldn't cash in. They had first downs on the Cisco' 10, 15, 32, 19 and 27 yard lines during the game and didnit crack the double stripe on any. Cisco had scoring shots from the Rams 32, 33, and 16 and failed to score. One timely pass interception in the end zone by the Rams cut off one threat. Brightest spot of the night for SAC was the work of the defense secondary. Cisco quarterbacks, completed only three of 19 tosses and had two picked off. Wrangler receivers were blanketed the entire game and Ram backs fumbled away at least four seemingly sure interceptions. SAC tossers, however, did little better, completing five of 18 with two intercepted. The Rams lost three fumbles to none for Cisco. . - ll A 1 W S- ,Qs .mg N .ff . ,,, , .i .,.,- 1 . ll K H l H-- '.,,i vi -. - . He called a smart game and was cool and calmf' This was one of the statements after the Rams' 26-14, victory over the Hardin-Simmons B team. End, Jimmy Carter, new- ly-discovered field goalis kicking ability which drew hefty praise from Bumgardner. Cavaness caught a pass from Vandergriff then played cat-and-mouse with the Button halfback and went into the end zone standing up. The play covered 66 yards with the pass itself going about 35 yards in the air. Rams Add Aggies to Victory String A San Angelo College-Cameron Football game could be compared to a cat and dog fight-it,s always interesting. For Cameron won the statistics and the Rams won the game - and both had decisive edges. SAC used every break given it by the Aggies - and made a flock of breaks on its own - to run up a de- cisive 33-14 victory, first ever for a Ram team over the Lawton school. SAC netted 153 yards total offense to 216 for Cameron. But most of the Ram yardage came inside the Cameron 20-yard line while the Aggies moved the ball well from 30-yard line to 30-yard line but bogged down in scoring territory. The Rams had 57 yards net rushing, Cameron 188. SAC tossed for 96 in the air. Cameron 28. Four players were waved off the field by officials, three Aggies and one Ram, center Drue Houghton. SAC came out of the game very badly bat- tered but full extent of the injuries wereift known until the next day. Bobby Weid, Ioe Crousen, Bob Bedell, Ierry Wallace, Jerald Martin, Drue Houghton, Hex Norris, and Ierry Frazier were all nursing bruises and sprains. Bum had high praise for the Ram defense which allowed Victoria only 49 yards total offense and three first downs. The punting of end Jimmy Carter 10 boots for a 35.2 average - drew praise from Bumgardner. Carter's kicks kept the Pirates bottled up in their own end of the field and the Ram defense did the rset. SAC, after scoring its second TD, leaned strictl on defense. The Rams punted seven times on first down and ran only 12 of- fensive plays from scrimmage in the second half. The defensive work of linebackers Drue Houghton and Joe Crousen, middle guard Jerald Martin and end Bob Be- dell drew mention from the Ram coach. Martin re- covered three Victoria fumbles, two of them leading to SAC touchdowns. Bedell blocked one Pirate punt and narrowly missed slapping down a second. ..,' 9, c .. rf' at ' . ,I Rams Drop Close One to Del Mar, 7to 6 The Rams couldn't cash in their scoring opportuni- ties, but Del Mar did-that is the story of the ball game. Del Mar scored first when the ball snapped from center sailed over jimmy Carter's head. The Vikings then took the ball on the Ram 7-yard line and rammed it over the goal line in three plays. Viking Paul Peterson kicked the extra point that was to make the difference. SAC drove 49 yards for their lone TD. Gene joffre and Jerry Wagnon did an enormous amount of the ball lugging. Quarterback jerry Vandergriff made the six points on a quarterback keeper up the middle. SAC's try for two points was to no avail when the pass from Vandergriff was batted down. In the second half the Rams threat- ened, but Del Mar held them when they got too close. On one try the Rams attempted a field goal but the kick by Carter was wide. SAC got to the Corpus Christi 6-yard stripe before the Vikings dug in to take over on downs. Q-, E ACC Kittens Victims ot Hard- Charging Rams SAC thumped the Abilene Christian Wildkittens by a whopping score of 60-27. Leroy Lewis led the Rams and figured in four tallies. The Ram freshman scored one TD and passed for three more. Lewis hit end David O'Bannon for scoring tosses of 38 and 73 yards, and fullback Billy Bob Holden with a 25-yard aerial. Gene Ioffre scored three times on scampers of 5, 9, and 21 yards. Bobby Walker scored on a pass in- terception which covered 43 yards. Ierry Vandergriff scored on a one-yard keeper. Iimmy Carter kicked five extra points and Gary Waren one. Ioffre was again lead- ing ball carrier as he romped for 121 yards on 21 carries. One of the crowd pleasers of the night was when Drue Houghton, sophomore from Highland Park, laid the ACC kickoff man flat on the grass. u-va mga. .' 1 Rams Sprint by Tarleton The big play of the afternoon was a 102 yards spring by Jimmy Carter. Carter intercepted a Plowboy pass 2 yards deep in the Rams' end of the zone and ran all the way, to up the Rams' lead to 13-0. Carter then kicked the extra point. He kicked all three of SAC's extra points for the day. After a scoreless first half, SAC's first tally came on a 68 yard drive. Freshman Marcus Strickland got the drive off to a good start with a 42 yard punt re- turn that ended on the Plawboy 26-yard line. Tarleton came roaring back for a 66 yard TD drive. They then passed for the extra points and the attempt was good and the score stood SAC 21, Tarleton State College 8. Tarleton took to the air for most of their yardage, but SAC outplayed them on the ground. Ioffre was the game's leading rusher with 69 yards. SAC had only 33 yards in the air and 137 afoot. The victory gave SAC a 5-2 season record and clinched second place in the PC with a 3-1 league mark. Rams Meet NMMI in Fierce Fracas--Bum Says SAC Won Bumgardner contends the final score should have been 36-35, in favor of the Rams and not 35-34 with NMMI on the winning end. A game film, clearly show- ing the Rams gaining a safety on the final play of the first half, was shown to a group of some 25 San Ange- loans. All agreed the movie showed that the Rams should have been awarded a two-point safety. On the play in question, San Angelo kicked off to NMMI and the ball was returned to the Aggie 2-yard line. On the first play, quarterback Roger Stauback pitched the ball back to halfback Tommy jackson on a power sweep to the left. SAC tackle Del Wilson broke tlu'ough and nailed jackson just as he received the ball. Another Ram tackle, David Hardison, shot through to put the clincher on. Officials ruled Iackson's forward progress had car- ried past the goal line. SAC's top player was Gene Ioffre. He punched out 206 yards in 20 carries, scored two touchdowns on runs of four and 32 yards. He gathered in a pass of 18 yards for his third. The Aggies scored first, but the Rams bounced back to tie it up. The TD covered 82 yards. The big play, one of 43 yards, was a roll out of QB Leroy Lewis. The Aggies were ahead but not for long. Marcus Strickland later started the ball rolling with a 17-yard punt return. joffre then caught a pass and moved to the Aggie five. Vandergriff tossed a beauty to Cavaness for a touchdown, and the first half ended 14-14. Putting it on ice 4 X YA K P+ X ,gig W 1 .-.., ,xv A 7 I M' r. w if f f' -if X ,, 4 f w Q 1 -.-r.
