The constantly improving Wolverines were edged by Fleming, 20—13. The two Lewis touchdowns were made by Kenny Etter on a two yard plunge, and Glenn Spangler on a flashy 61-yard punt return. A favored Graham eleven was met by tough oppo¬ sition in Salem. Kenny Etter, Bob Bardsley, and Larry Leonhardt scored, and the final tally was 19—19. The spirited Wolverines really played their hearts out against an over-rated Jefferson team. Only a contro¬ versial 51-yard run saved Jefferson from defeat. The fax, 21—7. James Brown kicked all three extra points. With several players hampered by injuries, the team was unable to stop the Glass Offense, bowing 19—0 in the Homecoming game. The Wolverines got their ' 60 season off to a fine start with a 26—0 romp at Covington. Richard Beach scored two touchdowns, with quarterback Wayne Hall and tackle James Brown accounting for the other scores. At left, Coach Je ce advises Sid Crosswhite. A thrilling touchdown march, ending in a 20-yard pass play from Charles Bailey to Glenn Spangler, handed Blacksburg a stinging 6—0 defeat in the sec¬ ond annual Sandlot Benefit game. In picture at left, Sandlot queen Carolyn Elmore ' assists Kenny Etter with his shoulder pads. In the Byrd game, Glenn Spangler, Kenny Etter, and Larry Leonhardt scored one touchdown apiece, and James Brown kicked two extra points. The Terriers carried home a 20—12 loss. 84

Varsity team members are as follows: Charles Bailey, Bob Bardsley, Donnie Butler, Carter Melton, Jimmy Birch, Joe Browder, Jerry Neighbors, Mickey Grant. BASKETBALL Jefferson, arch rival of Andrew Lewis, came out second best in a pair of close en¬ counters. The Wolverines won the first game by a score of 45—43 and the second with 63—58. The A.L. boys won the first game with Drewry Mason, 50—46, but split the bill by losing a tough 50—46 decision. In another pair of non-district games, the Salemites whipped Buena Vista, 66—52, but scrambled to win the second, an exciting 65—44 contest. Despite their most gallant efforts, the Wolverines received a pair of stinging defeats at the hands of E. C. Glass. The scores were 50—33 and 62—37. The team romped to victory over William Byrd, however, winning the first game 61 — 37, and the second with the overwhelming score of 76—44. In both games with Danville, Dame Fortune frowned on our Salem boys. In the first game, the Wolverines came up on the short end of a 56—53 tally. In the sec¬ ond game, they shot 42 per cent and scored 74 points, but lost, 86—74. 86
