Assemblies The Christmas Musical Selection of the A Ca- pella Choir ends the day, before vacation, on a sacred note. The Christmas spirit is instilled in the An¬ drew Lewis Student body as the Freshman Girls ' Choir takes part in the Christmas Assembly During the Christmas Assembly Mr. Miller presents the baskets we filled for the “Needy to Dr. Blankenbaker, chairman of the Basket Bureau Beth Poole as Mrs.Mann,Ted Carroll as Sam, Maslin Whitescarver as Mrs. Simms and Owen Napier as Snakes take part in a play “Thanksgiving in Mannsvillc” presented by the drama and choir departments. A Roman Museum comes to life at night as Jupiter hears that “Juno’s in Love”

Homecoming The Homecoming Court, at Municipal Field, being presented at an assembly to the Student body are, Left to Right: Linda Kay Hartman (Queen); Pat Poindexter (Maid of Honor); Donna Ferguson, Barbara Cannon, Becky Howard, Dot Fretz, Nancy Keyes, Shirley Mills, Betty Lou Shannon, Judy Jamison, Gayle Garrison, Carol Rutledge. Our own Pioneer Cadillac is one of the many, many decorated cars in the Homecoming Parade. As Linda Rader, president of the Sports Club, crowns Buddy Perry, Homecoming King, Joyce Cundiff, vice president of the Sports Club, Mark Graybill, president of. the Monogram Club, and the Home¬ coming Court share the honor of the crowning. This prize-winning float was entered by the Latin Club using the idea “Sic Semper Tyrannis” on the Virginia Seal; the club created the float “Thus Always to Halifax”; Halifax was our opposing Homecoming team. The Homecoming Court of 1958 prepares to enter the football field during the halftime activities of the Homecoming Game.

Spokesman; Tudy Keith—All-State Choir—Soprano; Larry Francisco—First Place 880 yard relay team at VHSL Track Meet; Larry Early—First place 8S0 Relay Team at VHSL Track Meet;Everette Obenshain—fifth place in shotput at VHSL Track Meet; Mark Graybill—City-County first football team; second football all western District; Ronnie Henry- Best Individual player in District in Basketball; Douglas Marechal—Exchange Boy Scout to Japan; Neil Churchill Second football team all Western, second City-County first football team; and fourth place shotput in VHSL Track Meet: Margaret Bounds—Co-Editor of Pioneer; Beth Poole—DAR Citizenship Award, first place in Brotherhood Contest sponsored by Youth Council, school representative in “I Speak For Democracy Contest; Diana Becker World Centenary Camp at Doe Lake, Ontario, school representative in “I Speak For Democracy” contest, second place in Brotherhood Contest sponsored by Youth Council; Frank Thomas Entry in State Farm Mechanics Contest, Eddie Eades—First place mile relay team and third place 440 yard dash at the VHSL liackMeet; Bruce Wright Captain of Track Team, first place Mile Relay Team at VHSL Track Meet: Clarence Tarpley—First place mile relay team in VHSL Track Meet, third place in 70 yard high hurdles and first team City-County Football, Honorable Mention All State first team, second place all Western District; Emma Altice—Won a Bond in State FBLA Contest on the theme “Goodwill Industries”; Tommy Coffman—Youth of the Year, qualified in National Merit Scholarship Examination, first alternate National Winner in 4-H Recreation Project, Co-editor of Pioneer; Allen Cross—Qualified in National Merit Scholarship Examination, Passed Westinghouse Talent Search; Bill Howley—First place Pole Vault at Washington Evening Star Games, tied for first place VHSL Track Meet, first place 880 y ard relay at VHSL Track Meet; David Rutherford—Most Valuable Football player (not pictured); Ashton Rudd—President of State Jr. Academy of ' Science, Honorable Mention in Westinghouse Science Talent Search, President of Roanoke Jr. Achieve¬ ment Association; Wayne Taliaferro—Second place in 70 yard high hurdles, third place in Broad Jump, and first place in High Jump at Virginia High School League Track Meet. “ Tommy Coffman won the Merit Scholarship sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. He was one of 600 chosen from 256,000 best students from 14,000 United States high schools. “This was the largest and most rigorous scholarship competition in the history of the Merit Scholarship Program. 18 )§► - ' V '
