Perry scored for Salem in the second period and Beason’s conversion won the game. At Danville, the Wolverines throttled GW’s speedy backs for a 26-6 victory. Perry scored from 12, 40 and 2 yards out, while Bailey went 6 yards for the last TD. Perry, Hesmer, and Wagner were among the unfortunate as theirs were called back. Cradock High School blasted Salem with four TD’s and came out with a 39-18 victory. Jack Beason returned a kickoff 75 yards to score on a sparkling run. Later in the game, Bailey went 4 yards and Bainter went 5 yards to score Salem’s other TD. Rainy weather forced the postponement of the game to Saturday night, but that didn’t hamper the spirit of the Wolverines as they rolled over William Byrd by a 19-0 score. Bainter scored twice on short runs, and Jack Beason plunged 7 yards for the last TD. A couple of costly Salem fumbles and an alert William Fleming defense gave the Colonels a hard fought 14-0 victory over the Wolverines in Victory Stadium. Back in Salem once again, the Wolverines completely outclassed the Fork Union “B” squad to the tune of 27-7. Bainter and Zini each scored twice, with Gresham converting twice. The postponement of the Jefferson game left Halifax County next on the A. L. schedule. The field was wet and slippery but long runs were the order of the day. Bainter’s three tallies from 60, 53, and 15 yards led the Wolverines to a 27-13 victory. Beason scored the last Salem TD from 8 yards and Gresham hit three conversions in four attempts. The Glass High Hilltoppers came to Salem next and opened a blasting single-wing offense that the Wolverines couldn’t stop, and went back to Lynchburg with a 27-0 victory. In Covington, Andrew Lewis met the “fired-up” Cougars who never stopped rolling until they had a 30-20 victory over the Wolverines. Salem dominated the first half with Bainter and Swain scoring. But the Lewis defense couldn’t contain the Cougar backs in the second half and they scored three times, enough for the win. L. f 66 }D

The long awaited Jefferson game was finally played and the Wolverines led 7-6 at the half, but couldn’t hold the lead. The Magicians opened a single-wing offense that led to a 26-7 victory over Salem. Gunter scored the touchdown on a trick pass play. The Wolverines’ offense never offered a serious threat to the Magicians, and the defense fell apart in the second half. Capt. Larry Clark calling the toss of the coin moments before the William Fleming contest. With precision blocking by Butch Hurt (49) and Larry Clark (57), Hugh Bainter takes a handoff from Hesmer, bursts into the open, and scores again against William Byrd. Coaches Bussard and Johnston instruct Frank Wagner before sending him into the game. An action shot of the Fork Union game shows Combs picking up more valuable yardage. ■ , i, m r i ft { 67 }
