Rough and re ady Hilltoppers Basketball William Byrd edged Andrew Lewis in a thriller, 37-36, in the next game. Leo St. Clair, William Byrd’s fine center, made a hook shot in the last two minutes and then Byrd went into a deep-freeze to clinch the game. Bob Price played his best game of the year for Andrew Lewis by pouring in 12 points, and playing a fine floor game. Gillock and Mundy added 9 each. St. Clair scored 19 for Byrd. Jefferson beat AL in the next game at the American Legion Auditorium, 48-32. The Wolver¬ ines stayed within one point of the Magicians the first half but folded in the third and fourth quarters. Wes Gillock and Bob Price played fine games for AL by scoring 13 and 10 points, respectively. Bucky Long, sharpshooting Jefferson forward, scored 20 points to take scoring honors for the game. William Fleming edged AL in the next game 47-42. Fleming had a big lead at halftime but the Wolverines came back strong in the second half and went ahead 41-40 with four minutes remaining. However, at this point, Russ Smiley and Marshall Mundy fouled out and the Colonels went ahead for good. Andrew Lewis thrashed Covington in the next game 56-37. Marshall Mundy and Jack Harrison scored 15 and 13 points, respectively to lead the Wolverines in the win. Wes Gillock had an injured shoulder and had to miss the game. Roscoe Humphries scored 14 for the Cougars. In the last game of the season, the Wolverines swamped Lexington 60-29. Marshall Mundy ended his scholastic career by scoring 23 points. Jack Harrison, Tommy Dooley, and Nelson Dudley also ended their careers in fine fashion. Harrison scored 5 points and played a fine floor game. Luther Garrett —Luther improved a great deal this year and began playing regularly toward the end of the season. This was his first year on the squad, but he will be back again next year. Tommy Dooley —This was Tommy’s first year on the squad and he is a senior. His rebounding was very valuable and he will be missed by the Blue and White next year. With more experience he should become an excellent player. 1

Russell Smiley —Russell, the tallest player on this year’s team, stood 6 ' 5 " . He probably played his best game of the year against Blacksburg in the middle of the season. If he can learn how to keep from fouling out, he should be a great player next year. Nelson Dudley —Nelson is a senior and this was his first year on the squad. He was a very valuable reserve, and with a little more experience he would have been quite a star. Basketball Andrew Lewis got back in the winning column by upsetting William Byrd in the next game 44-36. The game was “nip and tuck” until the last four minutes when Marshall Mundy sank 4 quick set shots to erase any possible Byrd hopes of a victory. Mundy led bo th teams in scoring with 19 points. Wes Gillock added 12 points and also played a smooth floor game along with Jack H arrison. The Wolverines won their second game in as many nights by soundly beating Lexington High 45-32 the next night. Lexington led by one point at the end of the first half, but Andrew Lewis came back strong in the second half to clinch the victory. Marshall Mundy tossed in 18 points to lead both teams in scoring while Bob Price added 9, in addition to playing an outstand¬ ing floor game for AL. Andrew Lewis continued their winning streak by thrashing Covington in a rough game by a score of 42-21. Andrew Lewis took a quick lead and was never headed. Marshall Mundy again took scoring honors by pumping in 22 points, one more than the entire Covington team. Wes Gillock and Jack Harrison added 7 and 5 points respectively and both boys played very good floor games. E. C. Glass defeated the injury-ridden Wolverines 60-26 in the next game to end the AL winning streak at 3 in a row. Jack Harrison had the flu and could not even dress. Mundy had an infected foot and although he played a little, he was slowed down a great deal. Wesley Gillock put up a game effort to keep AL in the game by scoring 8 points. Bobby Price acted as play- maker and played an outstanding game in addition to adding 4 points. Nelson Dudley also showed that he could score by adding 6 points to the Wolverine cause. Ken Burnette took high scoring honors for the game with 19 points. Stop posing, boys All that for one little ball
