Now remember, boys Managers: Crosswhite, Everette Ellers, Haupt, Eddie Ellers Basketball When the Wolverines opened practice this year, Coach Harless had only two lettermen, Jack Harrison and Marshall Mundy, returning from the 1950-51 team. However, with these two and several boys who had gained some valuable experience last year, but had not won letters, the Blue and White opened their season on January 2, with the Alumni. Despite the fact that the Alumni had not had much practice, they put up a game battle and it was not until the final quarter that the Wolverines went ahead to stay. Wesley Gillock, Jack Harrison, and Bob Price led Andrew Lewis with 8 points each. Jim Black was high for the Alumni with 9. The game ended with AL ahead 37-32. George Washington of Danville came to Salem with one of its best teams in years and was expected to roll over the Wolverines. However, Andrew Lewis, behind the dead-eye shooting of Marshall Mundy, put up a stiff fight all the way. In the last quarter, the Salem boys began to tire and the fresh reserves from Danville increased the lead. Mundy led Andrew Lewis with 17 points, but Cary Henderson, Danville center, had 18. The final score was 55-32. Blacksburg edged the Wolverines 31-27 in the next game. The Salem boys led most of the game, but the Indians got “hot” in the last few minutes to insure the victory. Bob Price and Mundy were high for AL, with 7 points each. Jack Llarrison also played a fine floor game. The Wolverines went to Lynchburg for their next game with E. C. Glass and were soundly thrashed 72-30. The Hilltoppers had too much experience for our boys although we never gave up. Wesley Gillock was high for Andrew Lewis with 8 points while Mundy and Harrison each added 6. Ken Burnette, high-scoring Glass forward, was high for the game with 16. ALL-CITY-COUNTY ’52 Wesley Gillock —Wesley’s first year on the Varsity was an outstanding one. He played forward and ranked second in scoring with 137 points. He will be back to play for the Blue and White next year. CO-CAPTAIN ’52 Jack Harrison —Jack was probably the best defensive player on the team, and his fight-to-the-finish spirit was admired by all. This was his second year as a letterman.
