Coaches, Left to Right: Ed Harless , Herb Copenhaver, Walt Crawford, Hal Johnston Sports This year marked the beginning of a new era in sports at Andrew Lewis. An altogether different feeling and spirit were shown by the student body and athletic teams. This change is due almost entirely to our fine coaching staff. Mr. “Hal” Johnston was appointed athletic director and head football coach this year. He has won the admiration and respect of his teams and the student body through his understanding and untiring work. Mr. Johnston also helps with the track and J. V. basketball teams. Mr. Ed Harless is our head basketball coach and assistant football coach. In two years he has developed one of the finest basketball teams that Andrew Lewis has had in several years. Air. Herbert Copenhaver is the Junior Varsity basketball coach. His fine leadership has developed a spirit in his boys which will help them in later years on the Varsity. Air. Walt Crawford is our head track coach and assis¬ tant football coach. He is well liked by all the students and does a wonderful job with his teams. «

Ray Watson —Although “Hots” was in¬ jured and unable to play most of the year, he was the high scorer of the team with twenty-four points. “Hots” played tailback and did all of the punting. This was his third year as a letterman. Buck Wright —Buck, an outstanding back with speed and determination was honored at the end of the season by being selected for the All- Western District Team, and the All-City-County Team. This was his third year as a letterman. Eugene Snead —Buddy, the fastest man on the team this year, played end. Due to injuries he had to drop off the squad after the Lane game, and his loss definitely hurt the team. This was his second year as a letterman. Marshall Mundy —This was Marshall’s last year for the blue and white. His will to win was a boost to the team. He played end and his spot will be hard to fill. This was his second year as a letterm an. Football ANDREW LEWIS.29 BLACKSBURG. o The Andrew Lewis Wolverines opened their 1951 season by running roughshod over Blacksburg in Christiansburg. Ray Watson was the offensive star for the Blue and White as he broke away for two scoring runs—the first from 15 yards out and the next from the Blacksburg 20. Late in the third quarter Billy Young took a reverse on the 50 and raced all the way for a touchdown. Eugene Firebaugh scored the last touchdown by plunging 4 yards. Ted Barker, Marshall Mundy, Frank Chapman, and Walt Dearing, who kicked 3 extra points, stood out in the line. Young, Ed Talley, Watson, and Ed Ferguson were standouts in the backfield. Hold, on, big Wolverine
