. V. Basketball Jerry Frank is shown here taking a re¬ bound away from two Jefferson J. V. players. Wesley Frye is waiting expectantly at the left. This was a very hard fought game, and the baby Wolverines probably played their best game of the year in losing to their more experienced opponents by a small margin. Bobby Flinchum, Kellogg Hunt, Jerry Frank, and John Holliday looked good for the Blue and White as they did throughout the season. Wesley Frye is pictured here waiting as the ball bounces on the rim in the Jefferson J. V. game. The Junior Varsity gained a lot of valuable experience in this game. It was very close all the way; and the J. V.’s showed that they can stay cool, calm, and collected. They lost the game but will be out for revenge in a couple of years when the same boys will probably be playing on the Varsity at both schools. Kellogg Hunt is shown here driving in for 2 points against the Junior Varsity from E. C. Glass. Ernie Sprouse is waiting to try for the rebound in case Kellogg misses. The baby Hilltoppers came to Salem with a power¬ ful team and really gave our boys a licking. However, our Junior Varsity gained some valuable experience playing against such a well rounded team. Bobby Flinchum, Kellogg Hunt, Wesley Frye, Jerry Frank and John Holliday showed in this game as well as others that they are capable of Varsity service next year. The rest of the team also improved during the season, and several of the boys showed promise for the future.

Track ipp ' The Andrew Lewis track team under Coach Crawford opened their 1951 season by easily defeating William Fleming by a score of 23 to 29. In all, the Wolverines took n of the 13 possible first places. George Gearheart was the outstand¬ ing performer as he captured firsts in the 100 and Ruble Smith, Slate Champ, 880-Yard Dash 220 yard das h es and also the high jump. The next week Andrew Lewis completely outclassed the Danville thinclads, 92 to 21. In this meet the Wolverines took 12 out of 13 first places. George Gearheart again led the Blue and White by winning three first places for a total of 15 points. The following week the Blue and White con¬ tinued their winning streak by overpowering William Byrd by a score of 86 to 27. However, in the next two meets the Andrew Lewis team was defeated by large scores, in the first by E. C. Glass in the regular meet, in the next by Glass again in the Western District meet. In the Western District meet the Wolverines nabbed the second place trophy by easily outclassing Danville. When the season ended, seven boys were chosen to represent Andrew Lewis in the State Meet in Williamsburg. The boys were Ruble Smith, Jack Harrison, Billy Young, Alonza Phil- pott, Tom Vest, George Gearheart, and Marshall Mundy. Of these seven the only one able to place was Ruble Smith who completely outclassed the other runners to take first place in the half-mile run. The Wolverines should have a strong team in ’52 and will be led by returning lettermen: Harrison, Young, Philpott, Vest, and Mundy. The 1952 schedule includes meets with William Fleming, William Byrd, Covington, E. C. Glass, Jefferson, the Western District Meet, and possibly another trip to the State Meet. 1951 TRACK SQUAD First Row, Left to Right: Jack Harrison, Eddie Talley, Don Robertson, Larry Simmons, Marshall Mundy, Kellogg Hunt, Billy Young Second Row: Jack Bayse, Alonza Philpott, Jimmy Candler, John Gibson, Walter Hearing, Ronnie Johnson SALEM SALEM SALEM SALEM SALEM
