Football Season Bedford o—Andrew Lewis 32 Despite the heavy rain, the Wolverines opened the season with an easy 32-0 victory over the Bedford Otters. Dickie Bunting plunged over for two touchdowns. He was assisted in this by Clarence Maberry, Charley Webber, and a newcomer, “Skeeter” Hesmer, who scored one each. Shelor and Graybill kicked the extra points. However, the “team” won the game and there is praise for all. Thomas Jefferson o—A ndrew Lewis 6 In the second game of the season, Andrew Lewis defeated the strong Thomas Jefferson eleven of Richmond 6-0. Again it was Co-Captain Dickie Bunting who plunged over in the final quarter for the hard-fought victory. With Charley Webber’s passing, “Skeeter” Hesmer’s tackling and the run¬ ning of all three, Andrew Lewis truly deserved the victory that it won. Byrd o—A ndrew Lewis 6 This score was slightly disappointing to the Wolverines but the Byrd team was a little stronger than we had antici¬ pated. In the third quarter one of the Byrd men fumbled behind his own goal and when the confusion was over, Frank Shelor was found to be covering the ball. This score was all we needed for a victory. The Byrd men set up a passing defense in the final quarter which brought cheers from the crowd but it failed to produce a score. William Fleming o—A ndrew Lewis 32 This game was played before a large crowd on Municipal Field and was one of the Wolverines’ best games. Our boys wanted to avenge their defeat at the hands of Fleming last year and they certainly did. The boys from Williamson Road fought hard, but they were no match for the Wolverines. Fleming made only one first down through the hard-charging Lewis line, while our boys opened huge holes in Fleming’s defense. However it was a good, hard-fought game all the way. Lane High o—A ndrew Lewis 34 Another defeat of last year was avenged by the Wolverines in this game against Charlottesville. Our boys simply couldn’t be stopped by Lane. Running up a high score was not our aim, but our offensive power reached its peak in this and the Flem¬ ing game. Lane couldn’t get its attack started and the Wolve¬ rines’ unscored-on record was kept clean. All the boys in blue played a fine brand of football and the game was a good one for both spectators and players. [ 98 ]
