!U. A- 1— a , — » . v— ' • . ’ kA 1 hpn-xajcJ — Foreword ‘y S-2- The Pioneer of ’47 is symbolic of the days of contrast in which we live. It is reminiscent of the days of yore when men of hardy stock upheld by force the same democratic principles for which so many of our youth today gave their lives. “Pioneer” days bring to our minds the hardships endured and bravery portrayed by such men as Andrew Lewis in whose honor our school is named. It is because of the courage and daring of these early ancestors that we are able to enjoy the privileges of the mightiest nation on earth. A In contrast, we, too, are “Pioneers” blazing new the trails of democracy with its principles of truth and justice so that enslaved peoples everywhere may enjoy a life of freedom and equality. The early pioneers pushed up their sleeves and with crude tools and materials set the foundation upon which we today are building. They beckoned and opened their arms and hearts to all peoples everywhere who were willing to endure hardships for a future of peace and contentment. Today more than ever we must continue to be “Pioneers” in our world. The peoples of the earth are looking toward America for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The echoes of the past urge us to go forward. We, the class of ’47, are “Andrew Lewis Pioneers,” each stepping out into his own field of endeavor. For the past five years we have been preparing ourselves for our larger tasks which lie ahead. Now, as we take leave of our Alma Mater, we must make use of this preparation we have made to stand the tests of life. As we meet these tests we must continually give able assistance to the growth of our nation into a better and stronger one for the coming generations. Our country has always upheld the torch of freedom and we must continue to keep the light. But even as we are doing this, we will often look back to our days at Andrew Lewis with happy memories. We, the staff, hope that this annual will help you recall some of these memories and if it does, we feel that it will have served its purpose. For each little incident recalled by it will make the book dearer to your heart every time you open it. So let us roam now with Li’l Andy through its pages as he relives his high school life and may this be a challenge for us to work harder in building ourselves and our nation. Staff of ’47
