FORTY.FIVE Foreword As the Class of ’45 and other classes to come leave Andrew Lewis, we know that they will take with them the everlasting memories of activities carried on at our Alma Mater. We, the Pioneer Staff of 1945, present to you this book and sincerely hope that it will help you to retain these memories. It has been said, “Without a song, the day would never end,” and, believing this to be true, we have endeavored to bring to you, through the pages of this edition of the Pioneer, the old familiar melodies we all know and love. To anyone who has ever attended this school, such songs as “Alma Mater,” “Blue Team,” “Sons of Andrew Lewis,” and “Salem High Spirit,” will never be forgotten as they symbolize the happy and carefree days spent here.

THE PIONEER Dedication To Mrs. Pearl C. Strickler, a teacher known and loved by all, we, the Staff of ’45, wish to dedicate this edition of the Pioneer. Mrs. Strickler teaches English Grammar and English Literature and has some strange power that makes English appealing to her students. She also teaches public speaking and is the faculty advisor of the National Forensic League. Often, while walking down the Senior hall, we hear, “Massa John, Pse come home,” or “Mammie, wheah ya gwine?”. Turning to see who is speaking, we find Mrs. Strickler, arms outstretched, her glasses on the tip of her nose, reciting a Negro dialect poem to her public speaking class. To us, she is an example of everything we may ever hope to be—lovable, genial, sympathetic, intellectual, versatile, understanding—she is “Our Ideal.”
