THE PIONEER FOOTBALL Frank Shelor Guy Spruhan The Andrew Lewis Football Team of 1944, although not equal to some of the powerful Salem teams of the past, gave a good account of itself during the season. Coach Guy H. Spruhan, in his first year at Salem for many years, with the assistance of Jim Peters, a member of the Lewis faculty, turned out a fighting team that never knew when to die. Although greatly handicapped by lack of experience and reserves, the Wolve¬ rines knew how to take it and come back fighting. This, they proved many times during the season for “Lady Luck” never smiled toward Salem. The lack of experience was not too greatly shown by the first team as most of them had played the year before but there were hardly any experienced players among the few Salem reserves. And in a close, hard-fought game, this lack really showed. Salem and the nearby parts of the county really need a sandlot football program to compete with the other class A schools of the state. The Wolverines won victories over the other two county schools—William Byrd and William Fleming, and E. C. Glass of Lynchburg but lost to Portsmouth, Roanoke, and Danville. Two games—Christiansburg and Charlottesville, were called off because of rain and bad playing conditions. 02 L
