THE PIONEER Calendar of Events September 22 —First pigskin game! Vinton at Salem. September 29 —At long last school begins. Are we glad! (?) October October October October October October 13—Our team travels to Portsmouth. 16—Jessie Rae Taylor gives impersonation program. 19— Senior assembly discussing our annual. Big plans. 20— Monogram Dance in the gym. Hmmm—Super! 24—The Community Fund is launched. 28—At last! The Jefferson game! Is everyone ready with his cowbell? Girl Reserve Dance afterward. November November November November November November November November November November November 3— Wheel The annual staff is announced. Now we can get to work. 4— Lynchburg comes to Salem for a big game tonight. 9—We’re off selling magazines again. 10—Zippo! Raymond Scheetz, magician. Look in your hats, keeds! Find a bunny? 15— Latin Club dance. Book Week program with Mrs. Felix K. Parker as speaker. Our first movie—“Topper Takes A Trip.” 16— An interesting assembly today with Dr. McMillan, missionary to China, relating his experiences. 18—Something new has been added! First school on Saturday. Gripes! 23— Mrs. Strickler produces play “Love in Bloom.” Lots of laughs in it. 24— They’ve done it again! They gave another Annual Follies Show. 28— Bishop Ivan Lee Holt speaks to packed assembly. 29— Thanksgiving Program today. And now turkey. Hmmm! December December December December December December 5—Girl Reserves launch Sixth War Loan. 12—Wheel Snowbound! 15—Basket Ball season opens with Alumni Game. 18— Christmas Carol concert. 19— “Hanging of the Green” ceremony by Girl Reserves. We see “Immortal Sergeant.” 22—Welfare baskets filled; Mr. Snapp gives Christmas play. January January January 4—Mr. Woodward snaps senior pictures. 15—Howard Cleaves shows us his animal movies. 20—Projection Club shows us “Stanley and Livingston.” February February February February 3—Tonight’s the night. Girl Reserve formal! 13—Another good movie—“Holiday Inn.” 23—Student pilots organize. 28—Senior Girls’ and Boys’ basket ball game. More fun! March March March March March March March 1— Operetta practices begin. 2— We won Western District Class A Crown from Jefferson! 6—Our team was defeated at Alexandria. 8—Red Cross drive begins with Girl Scouts presenting play for lower grades. 13— Student Christian Association presents assembly. 14— Invitations ordered. 15— The Lions’ Minstrel is given here again.
