"Hickory Orientation" guides new students through their First bewildering weeks at Jackson HOP Seated - Marilyn Katz, Betty Chang, Edward Patricia Stolz, Gary Slornan, Bernard Ford Carol Lewis Ehrlich Mrs Heckman Cadviserj, Georgia Palmer. Standing Jane Marx. Miriam Lando, Marguerite D'Amato, Barbara Kurz, We are proud to print the following letter recently sent by our Student Relations Council to students fighting for scliool integration in Louisiana. Dear F riend, The students of Andrew Jackson High School, speaking through their Student Relations Council. want to commend you and your family for the courage and for- bearance with which you are meeting the hardships you have encountered in your fight for a great principle. Andrew Jackson is one of the many integrated high schools in New York City. Here we are experiencing what you are helping to bring about in the South. In our school Negroes and whites make up the student body and the faculty. Negro students and white students sit in the same classrooms and work together in all extra-curricular activities. Negro teachers and white teachers are judged by their students strictly on the basis of their quality as teachers. These things are taken for granted. They are a natural part of school life. We are fully aware of the inhuman behavior, the humiliation to which bigots have subjected you. Vle know it is always hard to be a pioneer. We hope you will take comfort from knowing that we, white students and Negro students. are proud to be part of a school in which integration is taken for granted. If we can help you in any way, let us know. Wle think you're wonderful. Sincerely, The Student Relations Council of Andrew Jackson High School STUDENT RELATIONS COUNCIL: First row - Mr. Ruth Epstein, Jessie Miller, Michele Kramer Mary Woods Blatt Cadviserj, Michael Kallman, Susan Ferris, Marilyn Ellen Schwartz. Led by Class President Betty Chang and advised by Miss Denig, the Council again sponsored the Student- Faculty Basketball Game, the traditional Senior Day and the Senior Dance. This year, for the first time, the Senior Dance was held in the evening, setting a Jackson pre- cedent. After the frivolity and informality of other celebra- tions, senior social activities culminated formally at the Senior Prom on June second in the Grand Ballroom of the Statler-Hilton Hotel. 46 Betty Chang Senior Class Preszdent Miss Joyce Denig Senior Class Adviser in
