Preparing regular commercial students for po-
sitions as secretaries, stenographers and oflice
clerks is accomplished by the Secretarial Studies
Department through courses in stenography,
transcription, typewriting and clerical practice,
including the use of the dictaphone, electric
typewriter, duplicating and calculating ma-
chines and other common office devices. All of
the secretarial practice students who take federal
Civil Service tests given annually at Jackson us-
ually pass. The Department oHers a typing elec-
tive to academic seniors.

In addition to training students for employ-
ment as bookkeepers, business machine opera-
tors, oflice clerks, buyers, sales personnel and
stock clerks, the courses in accounting, busi-
ness machines, commercial law, textiles, non-
textiles, retailing, advertising, salesmanship
and small store operation offered by the Ac-
counting and the Merchandising Departments
enable even those who do not enter business
to function more effectively in the community.
The accounting course also serves as prelim-
inary training for those who decide to attend
college to become C.P.A.'s or accounting
