. 0763 In accordance with the current emphasis on mathematics, the Math Department oH'ers ad- vanced placement courses in calculus and analyti- cal geometry as well as the traditional courses in algebra, geometry, intermediate algebra, and trigo- nometry. An important co-curricular activity, the semi-annual magazine Digit Digfsi, publishes arti- cles on mathematics and science to extend students, interest in these Helds beyond the limitations of the curriculum. Our students enter the annual contests of the Mathematics Association of America and of Pi Mu Epsilon, honorary mathematics fraternity. MR. MORRIS JACOBSON Chairman Mr, Madrid introduces a world classic to the Spanish literature class. I I 0 I U Z Offering courses in French, Spanish, German and Latin, the Language Department seeks to teach students to read, speak, write and, principally, to understand their chosen languages. Tape recorders, slide projectors, phonographs, records and a film sound projector are used. Special fourth year lan- guage classes are designed to give interested stu- dents a better conversational knowledge of their languages. International understanding is fostered through study of the culture of the people, whose music, song and dance are usually reflected in the annual Language assembly program. Wle are given an understanding of the world and the people around us in courses in world geography, world history American history and economics. A newly organized History 12 class concentrates on special politi- cal, social and economic problems. Visual aids are used to supplement the usual class recitations. In addition, outside sources of information, such as the Social Security Agency, are tapped when their contribution can augment our over-all knowledge of society. The Human Relations Drama Workshop, in cooperation with the National Con- ference of Christians and Jews, promotes better inter-group relations within the community through the presentation of short dramas depicting brotherhood themes. At the end of each 'open-end' play, given in schools and community centers, the audience has an opportunity through informal discussion to clarify its views on various social problems and to suggest solutions. 20
