By providing varied levels of instruction. the English Department tries to meet the
needs of each individual. In regular, remedial and honor English classes, and in
special classes in journalism, creative writing, dramatics, and public speaking, the
Department seeks to fulfill its aim of stimulating the minds of students and creating
an understanding of the English language. In addition the Department oHers quali-
fied students special classes in journalism, creative writing, dramatics, and public
speaking. Co-curricular activities-Hickory Log, our newspaper, Star, our literary-art
magazine, and the annual fall play-provide talented students with opportunities
to practice new techniques and to use special abilities.
Reading classes are conducted both for the improvement and the development of
reading skills. A special college preparatory course in reading and study techniques

Serving as a center for reference and recreational reading,
the Andrew Jackson library houses approximately 19,774
volumes and acts as custodian of Jackson Files, scrapbooks
and distinctive trophies. Our teacher-librarians provide
classroom instruction in the use of library resources and re-
search techniques, with practice sessions in the library. Ad-
ding another facet of interest and enjoyment, the Parents
Association holds its annual Book Fair here, attracting most
English classes and many free-lance browsers.
