Editor: JOHN KEILMAN Asst. Editor: KATHY VAUGHAN Moderator: FR. CHARLES SMITH Cover Design: CYNTHIA LUKSUS 4 ilEM Andrean High was established in 1959 by the Most Reverend Andrew G. Grutka, Bis- hop of Gary, as a co-institutional school. It is located on about 30 acres of land, just outside the City of Gary. This school of approximately 1560 stu- dents is staffed by the Basilian Fathers, the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius, and Christian laymen and women. It is ad- ministered by one principal who is assisted by two vice-principals, one for the boys and one for the girls. The objective of Andrean High School is the development of its students into well- balanced personalities, directed toward super- natural as well as natural truth, so that they may live and work as true followers of Christ. This objective is well defined in the school’s motto, Magister Mens Christus, that is, " Christ is my Teacher.” Opposite Page: Connie, Jeanne, and Bob Tully visit with Bishop Grutka. 5 College Night representatives discuss nursing with interested students. " So you’re the one who snitched on us.” Basilian priests concelebrating a First Friday Mass 9 Judy Krane, Mark Williams and Jerry Wilski help Fr. McGillis celebrate his birthday. Checking to see who made the Honor Roll mam, " This clay is great for making my hands rose-petal soft.” 10 Jim Berry ponders the outcome of a wres- tling match. Mike McDonald and Dan Manista pause for a moment at the Borman Day Parade. Packagi ng food for the Thanksgiving Drive I I Athletic assemblies ignite a winning enthusiasm. " Greedy! It ' s mine.” 13 Latin Club Members assemble programs for City Conference. " Put the ' crusher ' on!” . . . and a year ' s supply of razor blades for . . . 15 Classes cooperated as a unit for a triumphant Homecoming. 18 FATHER JOSEPH ABEND Guidance English SISTER M. MARY ELSNER Latin 31 Seniors — Sentimental fit Zke End, But Proud Zo Be Andrean graduates SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Derrick Dudash, Trea- surer; Marilyn Reed, Vice-President; Barb Ornelas, Secretary; John Kochis, President. My dear Seniors, You were only freshmen in 1963 when I wrote my part- ing message to Andrean’s first graduates. At that time your own graduation seemed so far away: it seemed far away to me and, I am sure, an infinity away to you. But, all of a sudden, it is here and tonight I am writing a fare- well to you, Andrean’s fourth graduating class. From my vantage point of years, I think it only fair to tell you how speedily time does steal away from us. The pace of the past four years has really been slow-motion compared with that of the years ahead. As you grow older, you will find each year vying to out-race its predecessor. I mention these things only as a prelude to my final word of advice before you leave Andrean: the world does not wait for laggards. You must work fast; you must seize opportunities; you must set your sights now and doggedly pursue them. Otherwise, you will see time and opportunities pass you by. And these pass only once. You must reach out and capture the opportunities as they cross your path. You cannot sit back and wait for them to single you out. It is true that success or failure rest in your hands, but success is only for itching hands. It is less poetic but more realistic to change Shakespeare’s " some” to " none” when he says, " Some have greatness thrust upon them.” Greatness belongs rather to those who take seriously the sage counsel of the ancients, " Carpe diem!” — " Grasp the opportunity!” May God bless you. You have been a fine class. So, to a truly fine class I wish true success — true success, I say, be- caus e true success will make the world a better place be- cause you lived in it and, at the same time, it will perfect you for eternal success with God forever. The hustle and bustle of Homecoming 1965 was in full swing as October 30 drew near. The five lucky finalists for Homecoming Queen were an- nounced: Bonnie Burns, Peggy Hush, Linda Pauer, Mary Povlinski, and Cindy Ramirez. The final touches were being made on the two floats that were to be the highlights of the eighty car caravan. The seniors constructed a castle of flowers that carried the queen and her court. The second float, a train, was the masterpiece of the combined efforts of the juniors, sophomores, and freshmen. Our Fighting 59’ers gave us another victory to be proud of as they defeated St. Francis DeSales 27 to 0! An excited crowd, a blaring band, a spirited football team, and anxious cheerleaders set the scene for the traditional homecoming ceremonies. The spirit of ’66 was momentarily hushed as Dave Masty announced Cindy Ramirez, Andrean’s 1965 Homecoming Queen. Mitzie Vonderhaar, last year’s queen, crowned her and presented her with one dozen long-stemmed gold roses. Homecoming activities were climaxed that night by a dance held in the gym. The highlight of the evening was the formal presentation of the Queen, her court, and their escorts; Greg Burwinkel, Derrick Dudash, John Kochis, Dave Kotulak and Tony Trapane. 121 Students Officers: Pat Biernat, Vice-President; Rosalind White, Librarian; Kathy Murphy, Assistant Librarian; Mike Lewis, President.
