Andrean High School, located at 5959 Broadway, is a modern structure built on 30 acres. Approximately 1600 students attend Andrean, which is a co-institutional school. The Basilian Fathers instruct the boys, and the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius teach the girls. Father John Burke, principal, is assisted by Father Robert O ' Halloran, vice-principal for boys, and Sister Rose Mary, vice-principal for girls. The word " Andrean " is formed from the name of Saint Andrew, the patron saint of Bishop Grutka. A dream in 1956, a reality in 1959, and a thriving Catholic high school in 1965, Andrean can look towards an ever-increasing and vital role in the life of the community. 4 ■- v-r (Christ IS m if 1 " leach er " . . .if you have kept Christ as your teacher and loyalty to Him has consumed your energy, Andrean will be proud of you ... " The evening tranquility is a sharp contrast to the daytime activity. 6 Jerry Levenda and Fr. Burke exchange small talk. There ' s a rush to get to The Wheel after a game. 7 Art classes develope students ' creative abilities. r Sr. Rose Mary and Bishop Grutka discuss the per- formance of " My Fair Lady " . Fr. O ' Halloran celebrates Mass on First Friday. 8 Students find the library a quiet place in which to study. Literary values are established in the English Seminar class. Morning Communion is one of the many reli gious services offered at our school. Bill Matunas waits on a customer in the bookstore. 10 Students find a chance for a bit of socializing before the 8:20 bell. Elaine Stazinski and Sharon Huber model their own creations at the style show. Mr. Steiner is a proud dad at " Daddy Date Nite " . Mary was named Andrean ' s Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow and was also one of the state finalists. The band practices for one of its many appearances. 1 1 pauAi for m om en Nick Schiralli finds a quiet moment. Bill Bailey wonders about the outcome of the race. Coaches Nick Crnkovich and Ray Lincolnhol dismayed at ref ' s call Doug Hand reflects on the success of the parade. Tim Maloney in a dreamy mood Frs. McKinnon and Moffatt enjoy the action at a basket- ball game. Mike Scelsi eagerly hunts for his shoes after a sock hop. 13 An informal Student Council meeting The smiling face of charity Rich Gundy shows how he won his silver copy of “Christmas Together " . Mr. Velasco directs the band during the recording of the band-choral album . Do you think this will be the Decussata cover design ? Susie Smith offers Carolyn and Mrs. Chale tempting cookies at the FHA Mother-Daughter Tea. Nick Schiralli leads a discussion at the Student Council Leadership Day. 15 Ron and Don Nagdeman surprise Fr. Moffatt with a birthday cake during choral class. Norm Miller and Bob Povlock discover the " real " Santa (Noel Jocus) at the Christmas Assembly. Sr. Jeanne connects with one at Field Day. The queen and her court relax after the tension of homecoming. Wally Alvarez pins ribbon for musical talent on Joanne Warde Harriet Witham and Tom Fitzgerald, Mr. and Miss Personality, at the King and Queen dance. Freshmen enacting a skit at the assembly before the Calumet basketball game. Fr. Sohn receives the Catholic Metropolitan Conference trophy from Mr. Niemiera. Looking on are Rev. Sullivan, Fr. Burke, and Rev. Garrity. Freshmen go through the paces at the Chemistry Club square dance. Coach Lincolnhol accepts the Catholic Metropolitan Conference trophy from Fr. Burke. Coach Stram presents Bob Kelley with an autographed football at the Athletic Banquet. 18 " Get your ice-cold frogs here, " says John Konrady. . . . waiting for tomorrow . . . Voiced fitted with (ove and prais My dear Seniors, I suppose you have seen it a thousand times since you first came to Andrean, embroidered on uniforms, stenciled on sweat shirts, blazoned on the stage, printed on football programs. Almost anywhere you look it is there — " Magister Meus Christus " — " Christ My Teacher " , the motto of our school. It is a short motto but, in its brevity, it contains a limitless wealth of meaning, the entire philosophy of Andrean, the reason for its existence, the only truly successful story of your own lives. On graduation day you will see it again; this time engraved on your diploma. Just as it was the first introduction you received to Andrean as freshmen, it will be the last word of advice we give you as you leave. It will be our prayer that day that this motto of your Alma Mater will for- ever remain the driving force of your entire future. In the years to come you may be laurel-crowned for your achievements in varied fields. You may become successful lawyers or business men, eminent physicians or teachers, lauded scien- tists or engineers. Along many paths you may carve your names in the granite of the world ' s ac- complishments . But, if, in the thrill of your success, any one of you forget . . . forget that in your formative years you chose Christ as the Teacher of the values of life, then Andrean, your Alma Mater, will be grief-stricken over the form of a prodigal child. If, on the other hand, you never hear the applause of the crowd, you see your mark on the world apparently lost like the path of a ship on the ocean, but if you have kept Christ as your teacher and loyalty to Him has consumed your energy, Andrean will be proud of you and she will secretly hope that she has played some small part in the making of a successful graduate. One week before the appointed day the five finalists for the queen competition were named: Marilyn Lebioda, Pat Markey, Tonia Szymanski, Harriet Witham, and Mitzie Vonderhaar. Preparations were made for escorts, cars, and the A- shaped float which was to be the center of the par ade — that unforgettable, eight block long caravan of honking, crepe -pa per draped cars. The varsity eleven were once more to be victorious, this time against Maryville Academy, and the final score was 59 to 0! They had piled up 26 points by half-time, when the traditional ceremonies took place. To an enthusiastic, screaming crowd of students, faculty, and returning alumni, Tom Kotulak announced Mitzie Vonderhaar as Andrean ' s 1964 Homecoming Queen. Kathy Haberkorn, last year ' s choice, crowned our new Queen and presented her with one dozen long-stemmed gold roses — and this climaxed Homecoming Activities. Later that evening, Oscar and the Majesties played for the dance during which the Queen, her court, and their escorts were formally presented to the school. The sock -hop ended; all that remained of Homecoming » 1964 were the remnants of those yellow mums, a few torn pieces of crepe paper, and the memories that will go on and on. 1964 Homecoming Queen Mitzie Vonderhaar 122 . . . This year our school was fortunate, for we received two such students, both from South America . Maria Isavel Rueda from Bogata, Columbia, and Maximo Bosch from Puente Alto, Chile, came to Andrean under the National Catholic Welfare Conference. Under this organization students are chosen on the basis of either their past grade record or an achievement test to study at selected high schools in the United States for one year. Both students took regular Senior courses, and graduated with the class of 1965 . Under the same plan. Max and Maria lived with American families who volunteered their homes for this purpose. Maria stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Dale Eisner, and Max with Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hepner. Max and Maria became whole- hearted Andrea nites, attending games, dances, and other school activities. They learned exactly what it is like to be a teen-ager in a typical American high school. Knowledge is a two-way street, however; so they imparted to us a deeper understanding of the people of South America. In this unique way — through actual experience — we learned an invaluable lesson which will stay clearly imprinted in our minds for years to come: people, no matter where they live, or what language they speak, are all the same. 128 Maria enjoys the Homecoming ceremonies with Mrs. Eisner and her daughter Mary. Max accompanies Maria to their first formal dance as Andrean seniors. Maria spends a few hours visiting with her uncle, an exchange student at Wayne University in Detroit. 129 Latin Club Officers: Donna Zancanaro, President; Jane Syrk, Vice-President; and Pat Ruzga, Secre- tary. Wirtz Plumbing Heating We would like to express our gratitude, first of all, to Father Smith, our moderator, for his patience in enduring all the whims of the editors, especially their ideas on running titles. Without your guiding hand. Father, this yearbook would not have been possible. Also, we wish to extend a special note of thanks to our staff, for the many and long hours of work (and fun) they put in during the past six months, especially those last few frantic and hectic days before the deadline. To Sue Schenher and John Keilman on activities, without your antics, working on the annual would never have had those merry moments. We want to say to Mary Romanyak and Vince Bobin on sports, we really appreciated your novel ideas about layouts ! On underclass pictures, were Maureen Monroe, Dave Vorwald, Carla Labanowski, FredGrabek, and Bill Vahary. Maureen, yo ur sense of humor carried us through thick and thin. To you, we also owe the running titles for underclass pictures. We can credit Diane Ziel and Shirley Mayer with the informal look the senior picture section sports. Also due to Jane Syrk and Dave Masty, the faculty section provides a different appearance from the past two years . To Mary Jane Reilly, Mary Kalousek, and Wayne Henderlong, we owe the accuracy of the senior directory. Thanks to Marilyn Lebioda, Kathy O ' Malley and Wally Alvarez for their efforts in acquiring the patrons we have this year. To our nimble-fingered typists, Cindy Jackson and Noel Jocus, a warm " thank-you " . Responsible for a large number of the photos we used, was Frank McLaren. We want to express a special gratefulness for his endurance in taking the senior prom pictures. Thanks to John Mills, too, for his help in taking photographs. To Jeanne Ambre, we owe the beautiful art work throughout these pages. To Mr. Robert Lewis, Sterling -Coner photographer, and Mr. Frank Mraz, photographer, our deepest ap- preciation for the many fine quality pictures which compose this book. Choosing a theme for the annual, was not an easy task. As seniors, we felt, that by using our " Alma Mater " we could most clearly convey our thoughts and sentiments about our school, our teachers, and our classmates . This year we added a special section, the Senior Section, for the Class of ' 65, because we wished to give them something extra, something personal. We present this third edition of the Decussata, ' 64-65, to you, the students, with the hope that in years to come, when you turn these pages, the memories of your high school days will be recaptured. Page two hundred gets the offlcal stamp from Co-Editors Linda and Dennis. J ' J ' er h onor ever P l rocicum, 200
