Yet, you have treated us as adults — it was not always easy to live up to — but we thank you for it. You are an excellent coach, and have led many a team to victory. You have inspired your boys with confidence. And you have inspired your history students to study and to think. You possess broad knowledge and enthusiastic understanding of history, and you have imparted this enthusiasm to your students. It is a challenge to meet you in debate. Your distinguished teaching has brought many of your students closer to high academic achievement. You have instilled a warm, intellectual atmosphere in your classes. And your wit and sense of humor are unforgettable. We believe that you are like the two men you greatly admire — ' ■ Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John Fitzgerald Kennedy — We believe that you possess the same high standards, the keen political perception, the keen intellect, and that certain dignity. You are a fine American. We, the Class of 1966, dedicate the 1966 Andanno to you with great appreciation, admiration and respect. ADMINISTRATION and FACULTY These are the ones who teach who guide who try to give us knowledge and understanding of life ahead of us. We are indebted to them for their leadership their patience their discipline which we did not always agree with, but learned to appreciate. They are the dedicated who have given us our future. CAFETERIA STAFF ROGER WHITCOMB Custodian 18 John Fitzgerald Kennedy 1917-1963 The Thirty-fifth President of the United States of America He was a man of action and of grace. He brought to the presidency a new excellence, a new idealism. He brought a new youthfulness, a warm informal dignity. And he died a young man, when we were young, as sophomores in this school. He was a man of culture, with appreciation for the fine arts. He was a man of intellectual greatness, and of conviction. He sought peace, but peace without surrender of freedom, and gained the respect of the world. He valued education. And he believed in us, America ' s youth. He believed that we could learn, and grow, and become the leaders of tomorrow. He placed great demands upon us when he said : " " And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country. " He was a man of strength and courage we all may follow. It was difficult for us to realize that he had died so young, at seven- teen, never to know the completeness of manhood. We are all poorer, sadder, for his death. If, in remembering Larry, we realize how very precious life is, if now we try to live our lives with purer values and warmer, kinder thoughts for each other, his death will not have been in vain. Larry was our friend. We will not forget him. Barnard Essay Contest Christine Prendergast First place Representatives to Boys ' State John McMahon, Dale Tomlinson, Charles Lane D.A.R. Election of officers takes place in the spring of the Junior year: President, Charles Lane; Vice-President, Ellen Stewart; Treasurer, Lorraine Brod- erick; Secretary, Andrea Pasquale; and Social Committee Chairman, Jane Gillan. The election of Council Representatives takes place in September of the Senior year in a manner prescribed by the Senior Class Officers. This year the officers decided not to have alternate representatives chosen. This policy was instituted in order to put a heavier responsi- bility upon each homeroom representative. The basic objectives of this year ' s Council are to coordinate and sponsor Senior Class Day, Senior Class Week, the Senior Class Musical and all other activities in which Seniors participate. The Senior Class Council also holds class meetings to inform each student of the work of the Council. The class dues, which the Council determines, are set at six dollars. They are collected before the middle of February. The class is run on a budget of over four thousand dollars, much of which is spent on the Senior Class Musical and Senior Class Day. Any money left over after expenses is used for such things as subsidizing the Andanno, establishing scholarships, or possibly setting up funds for a future reunion of the class members. A lovely night — wild and gay June 4, 1965 — our junior prom The King ' s Gra nt Inn was splendidly transformed into the majestic castle of Camelot with its fair Maidens and its Knights in shining armor. As the happy couples arrived, a sweet fragrance of flowers and perfume lingered with each. There was dancing by soft lights in the ballroom and by moonlight at pool side. Throughout this festive holiday the exuberant voices were brimming with fun. The climax of the evening was the crowning of Lorraine Broderick . . . " A fairer maiden there could not be. This year the Junior Class faced problems similar to those of previous years with the exception that each year the problems have become more com- plex. There were class expenditures to be considered, the class ring to be chosen, and the prom to be planned to everyone ' s satisfaction. The effort was put forth this year to have a standard school ring. This was not a new idea, rather, the first time any action was taken in that direction. The prom was the class ' s most important undertaking. The prom is given an- nually by the juniors for the seniors. Chris Urguhart and Bill Gower were chosen prom co-chairmen in December. " The purpose oi the council shall be to unite, control, and aid all organized activities, charter all clubs and organizations in Andover High School, and promote the general welfare of students and school by encouraging good citizenship. " This is the object of the Andover High School Student Council as it appears in Article II in the Student Council Constitution. It makes the council an organization of help and one of true representation of the student body on all important matters. This year ' s council tried to uphold this purpose. Every member of the council worked hard in the hope of making the council the voice of the students. Because the council is the most important organization in the school, its burdens were heavy, but it handled them well. With each member realizing that he was at the service of the student body, the council welcomed all the questions which came before it, and took a sincere interest in all student situations and problems. This past year was one of looking over earlier records, finding ways of improvement and setting the foundation for strong, unified councils in the future. The 1965-66 council was not one of radical change, be- cause things that are done too quickly are often done with error. The senior members of the Andover High School Student Council leave with the hope that they helped the student body in every possible way, and they hope the councils of the future will put all their energies and eflForts into the making of successful, useful councils. The National Honor Society is an outgrowth of similar organizations founded in colleges and universities to give recognition to those stu- dents who have maintained high scholarship and who have also served their schools as outstanding citizens. Membership in this organization is one of the highest honors a school can bestow upon a student. The emblem of the society is the keystone and flaming torch. The keystone has at its base the four letters C, S, L, S, which represent the cardinal principles of the society: character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The flaming torch symbolizes the society ' s purpose, which is to hold these principles above all else, as goals toward which mem- bers should always strive. It is at the ceremony for the induction of new members that the traditional Lighting of Candles — the candles of Education, Character, Scholarship, Leadership, Service — takes place. About fifty juniors and seniors are given membership each year. To be selected for an Andanno editorial or staff position is an honor and a great responsibility. Each editor, each staff member must work his hardest to meet deadlines and to publish the most comprehensive, interesting yearbook possible. The Andanno is a team effort, with every member striving and creating together — expressing individual tastes, but still respecting each other ' s opinions and willing to compromise, so that progress is not de- layed. The 1966 Andanno is the final, careful compilation of And- over High life of the graduating class, and of the future gradu- ates, of their teachers, activities, sports. It is, hopefully, youth captured — in the photography, art and literature. The 1966 Andanno will become outdated — yes — in the years to come. This must be expected. Styles, ideas, and people will change. But one thing will never change — and this is youth. Each editor and each staff member has tried to produce a year- book of exuberance, and dignity — -with the feeling of youth. The keynote of any yearbook should be quality. The 1966 Andanno Staff has striven to create a yearbook that the Class of 1966 will be proud to have — now and in the future. 92 MOSAIC MOSAIC STAFF last row: Daniel Wefers, Dean Eastman, Donald Close, Robert Wedg- wood, Bruce Robb, James Monroe, Raymond Pucci, William Wedgwood, Laurence Loew, Peter Wojtkun, Chandler Bailey, David Konjoian, David George, third row: Susan Vanasse, Donna Galber, Candace Hatfield, Linda Kopatch, Norma Randall, Judith Salvage, Cathleen Costello, Jeanne Ellis, Janice Stewart, Gwen Batchelder, Priscilla Burnham, Roberta Bussiere, Gretchin Witman, Marilyn Marotta, Harriet Keaney, Ann McGin ' ty, Carol Dustin, Judith Kane, JoAnn Somers, Catherine Palmer, Virginia Campbell, second row: Janina Wojtkun, Lorraine Broderick, Francoise Hautemulle, Ruth Wesolowski, Jeannie Lowe, Christine Urguhart, Carol Lichtman, Ellen Goldman, Nancy Reidy, Lyn Deyermond, Betsy MacMackin, Linda Greenwood, Anne Christopher, Susan Koza, Kathy Lauder, Elizabeth O ' Leary, Kathleen Scott, Jeannette Forma, Jacquelyn Penny, Paula Woodworth. first row: Anne Barker, Martha Cronin, Cheryl Southwell, Michelle Fereira, Jane Hamilton, Judith James, Jan Malone, Nancy Haggerty, Sandra Brouck, Jane Valen- tine, Frank Kennedy, Anne Moss, Susan MacMackin, Lynne Demers, Gwendolyn Warwick, Mary Lou Lebow, Kathy Spires, Susan Battles, Sheila Fair, Hannah Howard, Debra Orth. m. m Editor-in-Chief Anne Moss MOSAIC EDITORS standing: Laurence Mazel — Business Manager, Holly Rotolo — Head Typist, Christine Prendergast — Literary Editor, Susan MacMackin — -Circulation Manager, Patricia Jost — Exchange Editor, Andrew Caffrey — Photography Editor, seated: Jane Gillan — Girls ' Sports Editor, Kathleen Mullet — Feature Editor, Mrs. Smith — former Faculty Advisor, Anne Moss — Editor-in-Chief, Susan Dimlich —News Editor, Kathryn O ' Brien — Layout Editor, Denise Trainor — Copy Editor, not present when picture was taken: Jay Weiner — Boys ' Sports Editor, Linda Gilmore — Copy Editor, Frank Kennedy — Advertising Manager, Lisbeth Nichols — -Art Editor, Mrs. Hawkes — present Faculty Advisor. This year the Mosaic made great steps forward in its role as the newspaper for Andover High. This growth began in the fall with a massive subscription drive which was renewed in February. The result: the Mosaic reached more students, alumni and advertisers than ever before. Also, a column was added to the Mosaic — Expresso — a column for students wishing to have their works published. The Mosaic is the " most independent school effort " for it is a complete student effort from the writing of the paper, the editing, the establishing of editorial policy, to the responsibility for its own finances. The 1965-66 staff was efTectively advised by Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Hawkes. Their understanding and knowl- edgeable counsel was invaluable and greatly appreciated. Under the efficient editorship of Anne Moss, the Mosaic afforded to those interested in its possibilities a sense of responsi- bility, of importance and of awareness. It also instilled in its staff members a respect for the world of publications. The 1965-66 Mosaic endeavored to serve the students, alumni and faculty of Andover High as a good newspaper, following only the finest standards of journalism. The club entertained sick children with a Halloween Party at a local hospital, helped with the distribution of brochures for the Andover Chapter of the March of Dimes, decorated the school for Christmas, and visited the veterans at the Tewksbury State Hospital during the holiday season. The members also worked behind the scenes at the Pre- liminaries for the Northeastern Section of the Massachusetts Secondary School Speech League at Andover High School on January 29, 1966. " Has everyone handed in his library pass? " This is the identifying call of the library assistant. His purpose is to re- lieve Mrs. Freedman of some of the more routine matters of running the library, leaving her free to attend to the constant improvement of the facilities. Most frequently, the 1965-1966 library assistants were engaged in cheeking in and stamping out books, taking passes to study halls, and helping stu- dents find study materials. They also made out fine slips, arranged books, covered and catalogued new books and magazines, put books on re- serve, and kept the library in order. Being a library assistant re- quires much work, effort, and time, but it is a rewarding job, because it aUows the as- sistant to better learn how to use the wealth of knowledge found in a library. OFFICE ASSISTANTS In the Main Office, a small dedicated corps of workers free Mrs. Connolly and Mrs. Skin- ner from some of their routine office work. The 1965-1966 of- fice aid staff collected and delivered office requests, kept the files in order, and filed re- ports. The girls also performed welcome services when they typed up forms and prepared record registers for the State of Massachusetts. At the annual football banquet, Alan Stocks was voted the most valuable player on the squad, and Charlie Towne and Arthur Ricci received the best offensive and defensive player awards. Bob Richardson, the team ' s big center, rightfully earned the Eugene Lovely Award for the best attitude. Footballs used in the winning games were presented to Tom Marjerison, Dale Inman, Bill Monroe, John McMahon, Ed Huot, Gary Lord, and Buster Deyermond. The co-captains elected for the 1966 team are Tom Sirois and John Maguire, and the team promises to have another very successful season. Andover High School can be proud of its basketball team again this year. The team finished second in its first appearance in the Merrimac Valley Conference, and qualified for the Tech Tournament with an impressive 13-2 record. The team also won the Little Three Championship. The team, led by co-captains Mike Noonan and Tom Hopkins, consisted of Larry Brucato, Tom Marjerison, Marshall Petrie, Jim Hurley, Tom McCullom, John Parisi, Ken Chlebowski, Pete Carmichael, and Joe Morrissey. A large amount of the team ' s success can be attributed to the fine leadership and inspiration given the team by Coach Hixon. Composed largely of Juniors and Sophomores, the Golden Warriers finished a distant fifth in the state meet, with a final meet record of 5 wins, 4 losses. Andover captured only two medals in the. Individual State Meet. Bruce Walker, an upcoming Junior, took first place on the high bar, while Chuck Shiebler managed to grab a fifth place on the still rings. Others compet- ing in this highly competitive meet were Mike Winters, longhorse, Glenn Testa, floor exercise, Paul Briggs, still rings, and Dick Hatch, still rings and parallel bars. Senior members of the team were Co-Captains Mike Winters and Chuck Shiebler, Frank Kennedy, and Glenn Testa. Juniors showing their ability were Bruce Walker, Paul Briggs, Ray Dillard, and Steve Bailey. The team ' s promising Sophomores were Dick Hatch, Pete Wojtkun, Lewis Trumbore, and George Stroud. Although plagued with inexperience this year, under the expert coaching of Coach Dorsey, next year ' s team should capture many more laurels. 110 Chuck Shiebler Co-Captain Mike Winters Co-Captain Ill TRACK last row: Richard Collins, Coach; Thomas Sirois, Lincoln Clark, Keith Bronson, Harry Petsol. fifth row: Alan Gorrie, George Moss, Michael Sirois, Allen Eastman, Randy Towne, Lawrence Westfall, Donald Dew- herst. fourth row: Richard Greene, Steven Gesing, Kevin Burke, Joe Doherty, Bruce Robb, Paul Hills, third row: Bob O ' Brien, Brian Ota, Richard Marden, Robert Hadam, WilliSln Gower, David Paulekas, Rob- ert Hall, Edward Dewherst, Stephen Marden. second row: Daniel Wefers, Bruce Hills, David Morgan, Dale Tomlinson, Robert Dalton, Robert Lamanna, Charles Towne, Charles Hatch, first row: Joseph Provasoli, John Hess, John McMahon, Dean Eastman, Edward Huot — Co-Captain, Alan West — Co-Captain, Michael Corry, Alan Thompson, Steven HaU. WINTER TRACK The 1965-1966 Winter Track Team was the strongest Coach Collins had ever produced. Almost going undefeated, it swept the North Shore League effortlessly, the one loss com- ing at the hands of out of league Beverly 48-38. The most tormenting meet, however, was the Class C State Meet. Opposed by a mighty Randolph team, Andover ' s tracksters fought race by race, finally edging out Randolph 33-32 with the last event. Although the relay quartet of John McMahon, Johh Hess, Dean Eastman, and Bill Gower placed second to Randolph ' s relay, they were able to boost Andover ahead enough to win, setting a school record of 2:28.2. Joe Pro- vasoli set the other school record at the meet with his 10:09.2 clocking in the two mile, 8 seconds off of his best timing, as he finished second. The only first taken was by John Mc- Mahon in the 300 with a time of 34.2. Much credit goes to Co-Captain Ed Huot for the win. Although recuperating from a broken leg, he was able to uncork a heave of 50 ' 4 " , taking second place and giving Andover 4 valuable points. Although the squad was strongly dominated by Seniors, there are many upcoming Junior and Sophomore members who should add tremendously to the team ' s success in the 1966-1967 season. SPRING TRACK Last spring the Golden Warriors completed a nearly undefeated season, their one loss coming from the pow- erful hands of Randolph at the State Meet by a mere 3 3 5 points. Ending their career in the Northeastern Conference, the Golden Warriors coasted to a victory in their last appearance at the Conference Meet, leaving seven new track records. Spearheaded by Steve Hall (hurdles). Dean Eastman (dash), John McMahon (440), Bob Hadam (880), Joe Provasoli (2 mile), Co-Captains Ed Huot (shot) and Alan West (mile), and two new prospects, Mike Corry (high jump) and John Hess (broad jump), this year ' s team promises to be the strongest Coach Collins has ever produced. Alan West and Ed Huot Co-Captains CROSS COUNTRY last row: Bob O ' Brien, Charles Hatch, Richard Marden, Joseph Doherty, William Giblin, Arthur Sadowski, Robert Hadam, Albert Tobin, Stephen Marden, Edward Dewhurst. first row: David Morgan, Joseph Provosoli, Alan West, John Hess. This year ' s X-Country team compiled the best season ever recorded in Andover High School history with 8 wins and 1 loss, the loss being to Billerica by 1 point. Co-Captains Joe Provasoli and Alan West led the team by taking first and second in ail regular conference meets. They were closely followed by two outstanding Sophomore members of the team, Art Sadowski and Steve Marden, who consistently placed under the top ten in meets. Andover ' s Warriors placed second in their conference, Billerica placing first. In Class C State Meet action, Andover ' s strong team, under the coaching of Mr. Dorsey, surprised everyone ' s expectations by placing second to the ever-powerful Randolph. West, Provasoli, Sadowski, and Marden placed 4, 9, 35, and 36 respectively. Co-Captain Joe Provasoli ended his Cross Country High School career at the end of the season holding four course records. He holds the high school record in addition to course records he set at Tewks- bury. North Andover, and Burlington. Next year ' s elected co-captains are Bob Hadam and Bill Giblin, and prospects look promising for another outstanding season in 1966. " If at first you don ' t succeed, try, try again. " Andover ' s illustrious golf team expects a great year in ' 66. The team includes such golf greats as David Yeiter, Les Weiser, Joe Tabacco and Keith Bronson. With such a team victory seems imminent. The enthusiastic Mr. Hixon must be mentioned as the driving force be- hind the team. Although not too successful in the past, with such determina- tion as the golf team has, who knows what may happen in ' 66.
