The ANDANNO 1965 ANDOVER HIGH SCHOOL ANDOVER, MASSACHUSETTS DEDICATION Mr. Richard Collins We, the class of 1965, take deep pride in dedicating our issue of the Andanno to Mr. Richard Collins. We feel indebted to him as our history teacher and our football coach. School spirit and inspiration have reigned throughout our high school days due to the sincere efforts and continuous achievements of Mr. Collins. We shall not forget his sharp sense of humor, his keen intellect, his respect and concern for others. His death caused us to better comprehend the vulnerability of man and the brevity of his existence. Although Stephen did not survive to graduate with us, we consider him a part of our class, a part of our lives. 54 QUEEN ' S COURT Left to right: Sharyn Lynch, Judy Jackson, Judy Simeone, Brenda Eldred, Sue Sheaf. THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES Who could have asked for a more lovely evening than May 15, 1964, the day of our Junior Prom? Throughout the day everyone rushed about to be ready for the magic hour of 8 o ' clock. Cars flowed into the parking lot of Hillview Country Club and high school students, magically transformed into elegant ladies and gentlemen, made their way into the ballroom decorated to the theme of " The Days of Wine and Roses " , where an evening of dancing was followed by unforgettable moments around the huge pool. An excellent dinner completed an evening filled with pleasant memories for many years to come. 55 PROM COMMITTEE 57 63 0 ' ' " C .N,.,, JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS ,j Standing: L. Nichols, D. Inman, L. COLLINS The Varsity Club, which dates back to 1942, is an organization comprised of all varsity letter winners. The club sponsors activities including the Basketball Jamboree, a semiformal dance, and a varsity-alumni Basketball game. The club also publishes a newsletter and sponsors scholarships for deserving members. Golden Warrior PEP CLUB 76 OFFICE ASSISTANTS 77 The Mosaic, under the editorship of Nedra Sanfilippo, has made many changes. There are a greater number of issues and a greater number of pages. Some new columns are " Letters to the Editor " " Student Council Members of the Month " and " The Surveyor. " There has been a marked improvement in editorials, sports news, and special feamres. Let us hope that our school newspaper continues to be as interesting and informative as it has been this year. 78 TWO YEAR MEMBERS Third row: D. Gaudet, G. Norton, B. Reardon, R. Kaczynski, P. One of the highest honors that is bestowed upon a high school smdent is acceptance into the National Honor Society for it means one has excelled in the four fundamentals upon which the society is based: character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Although the Honor Society is less active than most other clubs it does sponsor some fund raising projects and faithfully offers a scholarship of one hundred dollars every year to a deserving student. NEW MEMBERS Seniors: S. Armstrong, P. Campagna, J. Carter, R. Dewhurst, W. Doherty, C. Ferris, L. Fitzgerald, M. Keaney, S. Kohli, C. Lane, T. Loffredo, B. Lundgren, D. Lynch, S. Lynch, G. MuUer, B. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY 79 ORCHESTRA 83 AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE This year the members of the chapter at Andover High School have endeavored to support Luis Gorostiaga of Paraguay by sponsoring many fund raising events. Andover High School hopes one of its candidates will be chosen by the A.F.S. in New York to study abroad next year. Luis Gorostiaga FOOTBALL GOLDEN WARRIORS " 64 " The Andover High Golden Warrior Football team of 1964 ended the season with a very impressive 6-3 record. Hopes for the Northeastern Conference title were diminished somewhat by a loss to Amsbury High 14-12. Not only did the Warriors lose the game, but they lost their co-captain Dave Bennett due to a fracmred ankle sustained in that game. On a soaking field A.H.S. beat a strong Woburn team 12-0. The Warriors knocked off Danvers 12-0. Newburyport went down to defeat 28-20, and Andover beat Methuen 24-12. On Thanksgiving Day, the Warriors charged over to North Andover. Coach Collins kept his record clean for never losing a Little 3 Championship. The team went on to defeat the Knights 24-13 and thus cap another Little 3 title for A.H.S. Mr. Collins along with Mr. Vickers, Mr. Dorsey, Mr. Bissett, and Mr. Hixon should be commended for their outstanding work in producing one of the best records A.H.S. has ever had on the football field. One of the most consistent players was AI O ' Reilley, the team captain. Mike Noonan, Tom Hopkins, Tom Majerison, and Larry Brucato, all juniors, saw considerable duty. These boys and the other members of the club helped the Warriors to go on to win the Northeast Conference Title. 88 GYM TEAM Co-captains: Ray Dery, Ben Ardizzonne SENIOR MEMBERS Standing left to right: Norman Drazy, Carl Vogt, Dave West, Sam Murray, Norman Auchterlonie, Greg Wojtkun Kneeling left to right: Mason Arnold, Warren Hastings, Ray Pelletier, Ray Dery, Ben Ardizzone, Robert Done GYM TEAM Led by co-captains Ben Ardizzone and Ray Dery the gymnasts of Andover High continue to be one of the dominating teams in Massachusetts Gymnastics. There was a period of sadness this past year. Braintree High broke the boys ' con- secutive winning streak. Our boys lost 139-135. Credit should be bestowed upon Mr. Dorsey for establishing such a commendable record. He realizes it will be a big job next year to fill the gap left by the seniors, but he has good potential in the underclassmen, and he expects to carry on the successful tradition of Andover High ' s Gym Team. 90 WINTER TRACK The Winter Track season of 1964-1965 has been a highly successful one for Coach Collins and the trackmen of Andover High. Our team finished a close second to Randolph in the State Meet in Boston and Coach Collins is very proud of their showing. Three of the boys qualified for the Nationals held every year in New York. Many school records were broken this past season as Rollie Heroux bettered the mark in the 1000 lowering it to 2: 18:08. Another standout was Bob Petrie who lowered the 600 to a time of 1: 17. Junior Ed Huot continued to better the shot put mark with a toss of 54 ' 9 " . 92 CROSS COUNTRY The only rewards a cross-country runner gets are tired legs and bursting lungs. It takes lots of stamina and courage to participate in cross-country, and good runners are few and far between. Led by co-captain Tucker Lake and Pete Shearston, the team compiled a record of 4 wins and 3 losses. Larry Robins, Joe Sweeney, and Mike McEneaney were the other seniors on the team which saw fine showings from Garry Brown and Al West, both juniors. Thanks for a fine coaching job goes to Mr. Dorsey. Larry Robins 94 Joe Sweeney Co-Captains Tucker Lake — Pete Shearston Mike McEneaney Jolene Levi; Coach, Mrs. Ruth Fairfield; Karen Stewart The Girls ' Gym Team is only in its first year, but members are trying to make this year a successful one. The first meet was against Framingham and Andover triumphed with a score of 49-47. The second meet, against Minnechauge, was exciting and close, but Minne- chauge pushed ahead to win 49-47. February 9th was the first away meet at Norwood. Andover secured a lead and maintained it to win 65-31. The girls are proud to have Mrs. Fairfield as coach. She has taught them nor only gymnastic stunts, but also how to walk properly. They are also very thankful for all the help and encouragement Mr. Fairfield has given. GIRLS ' GYM TEAM SENIOR MEMBERS Front row: Judy Henderson, Jolene Levi Back row: Pam Burnham, Sharon Mullen 95 GIRLS ' BASKETBALL This year the Girls ' Varsity Basketball team suffered several losses. The only victory was against Lawrence 40-15. One lesson that experience taught the girls is they should play to win rather than playing for enjoyment. The junior varsity team was slightly more successful. They won games at both Lawrence and North Andover. The team members, all sophomores, show great prospects for the future because of the past year of experience. With this year ' s experience accompanied by the excellent coach- ing of Miss Tribou, the teams look forward to better times in league competition. Third row: S. Butcher, S. Dimlich, J. Earley, M. Carr. Sit- ting: A. Hart, J. Pike. 96 This is the last year Field Hockey will be intramural at Andover High. Next year it will become a varsity sport. Unfortunately, the team suffered an unsuccessful season. Our girls were defeated 5-1 at North Reading and twice at North Andover; the first game 5-1, and the second 3-2. However, the girls have gained much experience and are antici- pating a good season next year. 97 J - . CHEERLEADERS •-ft 7- VARSITY Back row, left to right: B. Dustin, M. Cronin, B. Eldred, S.
