Claud W. Perry, Mr. L. Fleer Meclaiii, Dr. Claude F. Dixon, Mi-. A. Richey Ramseur.
To the Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees is responsible for carrying out
the policies of the State Board of Education. It is their
job to provide and maintain the physical properties of
our school system.
The Board plans the budget for the district, is in
charge of employment and salary decisions concerning
the teachers, plans the physical education program, super-
vises the courses of study, decides the calendar for the
year.
The most outstanding improvements instigated by the
trustees are those concerning the new schools built
throughout their years of service and the many improve-
ments made to the existing schools.

SCIENCE
DEPARTMENT
The Science Department of Hanna High
serves every group of students, regardless of
their future plans. Biology is enjoyed by every
student in the tenth grade. Chemistry is an
elective open to juniors and Seniors, and is
primarily for college preparatory students and
future nurses. Physics is a Senior elective for
college preparatory students. Our newest course,
Senior Science, is a general education elective
course. The several courses combine laboratory
work with lectures so that students may apply
the ideas they have studied.
FOREIGN LANGUAGES
The Language Department of Hanna High consists of a
second-year Latin course and a three-year French course.
Under Miss Elizabeth McCown's instruction, the Latin stu-
dents study, not only the language of ancient Rome, but also
Roman civilization. Recordings are used to improve the stu-
dents' pronunciationg filmstrips, projects. and parallel further
their knowledge of human culture,
The French courses, taught by Mrs. Carl Epting and Mrs.
Gene Metz, stress aural-oral method of learning foreign lan-
guage. The aural-oral method is based upon the natural process
of language learning-hearing hrst, then speaking, then later
reading and writing. To implement the process of hearing and
speaking French extensive use is made of tapes and records
so that the students will be exposed, not only to the teachers
pronunciation, but also to that of native Frenchmen. A different
series of films is presented each year in order to enrich the stu-
dents in French traditions, history, culture, and geography.

fied as a course in citizenship.
Psychology, the science of human be-
havior, gives us a basic knowledge of how
to achieve a sound, wholesome, mature life.
THE MATHEMATICS

Long before Sputnik a strong mathematics
department was considered vital at Hanna
High. College preparatory students are urged
to take Algebra ll, Plane Geometry, and Senior
Algebra and Trigonometry. Commercial stu-
dents usually take Applied Mathematics, Con-
sumer Living, and Advanced Business Arith-

THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
The English Department of Hanna High seeks, not only to teach a
basic knowledge of English, but also to arouse the interest and apprecia-
tion of the student for our native tongue. There are various supplemen-
tary devises to aid teachers in their presentation of the courses. The
student has an opportunity to hear Macbetb, AIIHKOIZE, and other poetic
and dramatic selections read by well-qualified speakers. Records for
vocabulary development are also extensively used. For the girl who
desires extra help or needs practice in addition to classwork, drill work-
books are kept in supply.
Out faculty recognizes that creative work is necessary to offer the
student a well-rounded, balanced English course. Creative writing is en-
couraged by many and varied contests, and lucrative rewards add special
attraction to the competition. The S. C. High School Literary Yearbook
and the National Poetry Association also encourage youthful literary
enthusiasts.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
At Hanna High there are no intermural sports. However, the intramural sports,
such as our annual basketball and table tennis tournaments, are enthusiastically
supported.
One year of gym is required, usually of sophomores. In gym the girls learn to
play field hockey, volley ball, basketball, table tennis, calisthenics, shuliie board,
softball, and folk dancing.
This year a testing system has been added. The girls are graded on their skill,
attitude, promptness, and appearance.
COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT
The commercial and distributive education students are kept busy through a
combination of classwork and practical experience.
The students taking secretarial courses are Hanna Highs unofficial secretaries.
They mt stencils, type programs, letters, announcements, booklets, and serve as
typists for the student publications-HANNASGALS and TIDINGS.
Retailing is one of the more important characteristics of Distributive Education.
The participating seniors gain experience and knowledge through an actual job.
HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT
Home Economics is offered to sophomores, and Family Living to seniors. In
Home Economics construction and care of clothing, textiles, nutrition, meal plan-
ning, table setting, food preparation, selection and arrangement of furniture, and

Students who find themselves with a problem, large or small,
can receive help from the Hanna High counseling system.
The homeroom teacher, having the closest relation to the
student, is the key person in the counseling program. Miss Mari-
etta McCown, Senior Counselorg Mrs, Ruby Grant, junior Coun-
selorg and Miss Margaret Hood. Sophomore Counselor and Chief
Counselor are on alternate duty in the office during the school
day to advise the students of each class. Over all these Counselors
is Mr. Sandlin who supervises the entire guidance program.
Our counselin s'stem romotes ood facul -student rela-

tions, advises students on their program of study in and after
high school, guides students in their choice of vocations.
HUMANITIES LECTURES
The seniors have been given a distinctive privilege this year
in the form of lectures presented by distinguished scholars in
realms of religion, history, math, science and the arts.
The desire of the Curriculum Committee in promoting this
series of lectures was to acquaint each senior with the history
of Western development.
Miss Mary McCown, Senior Class Counselorg Mrs. Ruby Grant, Junior Class
Counselorg Miss Margaret Hood, Sophomore Class Counselor and Chief
Counselor.
THE LANGUAGE LAB
At long last Hanna High has become equipped with a
language lab, or rather the beginnings of one. In order to
provide greater opportunity to hear native speakers, we have
numerous records and tapes. By listening through earphones,
students can reproduce the foreign sounds more accurately.
They can check their programs in reproducing these sounds
by listening to a recording of their pronunciation. "That's
me?" is a familiar sound in our' language lab.
Mahalie Brown, Carol Adams, Connie McClain, Brenda

SOPHO ORE CLASS HANNA HIGH 1960
When we first entered Hanna High, we suddenly became
aware of our beginning maturity. We deemed ourselves very
superior and fortunate to be at last in high school. Little did
we realize the responsibilities that came with all of our free-
dom. We learned to adapt ourselves to entirely different situa-
tions and problems. We learned to regulate and make use of
every minute of our time to keep up with the increase in our

COMMERCIAL CLUB
The sound of bells ringing. the pounding of typevvriters, and the
svvishing of typing erasers can be heard each day in the typing room.
These are commercial students hard at work preparing for future
careers in the business vvorld. Many of the commercial students hold
part-time jobs, which give them the training and experience they
need. The Commercial Club strives to solve problems of living, to
develop proper attitudes, to develop skills, and to turn out a respon-
sible, neat, and well-informed secretary.
Developing skills? Yes, but more important-developing proper
attitudes. "Skills to get the job-attitudes to hold it." 5

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
The skills developed in this department touch virtually
every phase of one's learning experience. The study of the
structure of language is integral, but of equal importance is
the study of meaningful literature, the source of thought-
provoking, entertaining, and informative material.
The classroom affords the student assistance in evaluating
what he reads and hears and gives him occasion to express
his thoughts in writing and speech.
To achieve this end the student is introduced to the litera-
ture of the world, with special emphasis upon that of the
United States and England. ln the latter two fields, he meets,
among others, Hawthorne. Cooper, Poe. Twain, Thoreau,
Whitman, Shakespeare, Swift, Stevenson, Eliot, and Dickens.
Essays, parallel reading reports, and term papers constitute
a part of the written requirements.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES
The study of foreign languages, once considered an educational luxury,
is becoming increasingly important, because, in a world daily growing
smaller, it brings the student into contact with the time-honored cultures
of other peoples and opens wider the doors of mutual understanding.
This year brings to Boys' High the beginnings of a language laboratory,
portable but serviceable. New methods and techniques in aural-oral pro-
cedure are employed.
For the interested student, the program offers French, Spanish, German,
and Latin.

VOCATIONAL DEPARTMENT
The vocational curriculum is designed for the student who plans
to begin a vocation immediately upon graduation from high
school. The program offers practical and classroom training in the
fields of textiles, auto mechanics, Woodcraft, agriculture, machine
shop, and mechanical drawing.
The textile department offers training in pattern designing,
spinning, and Weaving.
In auto mechanics the student learns the structure and function
of motors and is trained to repair them.
The student in Woodcraft learns the use of various saws and drills,
simple and powered, and develops skills in constructing articles
from wood.
Scientific methods of farming and dairying are taught in the
agriculture department.
Machine shop familiarizes the student with the mechanics and
operation of several basic machines and with simple foundry
techniques.
Mechanical drawing teaches perspective and relational drawing
as a course complementary to the trades and industry program.

SOCIAL STUDIES
DEPARTMENT
Aware that man is a social being, course
offerings in World and American History and
in United States Government aim at impress-
ing the student with his heritage, its privi-
leges and responsibilities, and with the fact of
international interdependence.
Sophomores in World History survey the
cradles of civilization and their development
through the two World Wars.
juniors in United States History trace the
nation's growth from its beginnings and keep
abreast of the times through a study of cur-
rent events.
Seniors in United States Government learn
about the legislative, judicial, and executive
functions of our government.
That the student may better understand
himself and others, and thus become a better
adjusted citizen, a course in psychology is open
to members of the junior and senior classes.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE
LABORATORY
Foreign language laboratories are increasingly in
demand in high schools across the nation.
New methods and techniques call for student
training in understanding and speaking the foreign
language, followed with instruction in reading and
writing. This follows the natural pattern of lan-
guage learning and promises to be highly successful.
An effective program of this order requires the
following minimum equipment: tape recorders, tapes
prepared by native speakers, and headphones.
Boys' High is initiating a language laboratory this
year. Basic apparatus has been purchased and is avail-
able to all classes of all languages offered.

Students have easy access to the principal for conferences concerning their present
needs and future plans.
NEW ADDITION
Finished early in this scholastic year and equipped with modern grey metal
furnishings was a new addition to the principals office. The construction
contains a private air-conditioned office for conferences, an office for the
secretary, and additional storage space, all very much needed for more adequate
and eflicient service to a constantly growing student body.
Students hear native speakers and imitate their pronunciation and intonation, a begin-
ning necessary to mastery of intonation patterns and grammatical structures.

UNIOR CLASS OF 1960
'Iv--41
Two rich and memorable years at Boys' High!! In
this brief span we have learned every nook and cranny
of our alma mater, inside and out. We have developed
our capacity for guileless intrigue and for discipline,
knowledge, and honor among men. We have grown
perceptibly in mental, spiritual, and physical stature. We
are one step nearer our senior year, one step nearer our
ambitionsg but, as we move steadily forward, we too are
contributing to the legacy of legend and tradition that is
Boys' High.

The Boys' High
SOPHO ORE CLASS OF 1960
We had long heard of Boys' High with its many tall tales-
some plausible, some incredibly fantastic, and its many demands
for rigorous study habits. We had anticipated a different and excit-
ing situation, and indeed we found it. Classes without girls can be
interesting. One can learn in a lackluster male atmosphere, lack-
luster but by no means monotonous or lacking in zest or esprit de
corps.
In short order we assessed the status quo and fitted ourselves
into the "new regimef' We now feel ourselves no longer new-
comers, but an integral part of the tradition that is Boys' High.

of Mr. G. E. Vaughn and has progressed steadily through the years.

Our homecoming was successfully completed by the defeat of Aiken. The score was increased as another T.D. was scored for the Jackets.
1959-1960 SEASON
The '58-'59 Anderson High Yellow jackets had captured the state
championship trophy in the triple "A" division. The question of whether
the 1960 Yellow jacket team could equal the 59 team was at hand.
Almost every first string player of the championship team had graduated.
Only time could answer the question.
This team was to be one of the lightest teams in Anderson's history.
The season started off well. The jackets were victorious in their first
three games. The future seemed very bright-then the jinx-Greenvilles
Red Raiders. It had been seventeen years since Anderson had beaten
Greenville on their own Held. The Jackets met their match and were
defeated by the score of 13-6. Full of vigor and fight, the Jackets
bounced back the next week by defeating Rock Hill. The Jackets seemed
to be on their way to a possible championship. Parker and Aiken fell to
the strong team. Anderson scored three touchdowns against Aiken in
the third quarter by successfully completing and recovering two onside
kicks. Having been postponed once, the Easley game was played on a
cold, damp Monday night. The Easley team proved to be a tough op-
ponent. Anclerson, however, added another victory to its list. Plagued
by the weariness of two games in a week and a flooded field, Anderson
lost to Gaffney 12 to 5. Anderson and Spartanburg, equally matched,
played a vigorous game which ended in a tie. Spirited by a pep rally
around a bonfire, the Jackets went to Greenwood. The "Fates" seemed
to favor Greenwood in the first three quarters. But the tide turned in
the fourth. Anderson again used its successful onside kick. It paid off
twice, and Anderson scored two touchdowns. Unable to score again,
Anderson ended the '59-'60 season by losing to Greenwood, 22-14.

BASKETBALL
The 1958-1959 Anderson High School
Yellow jacket basketball team experienced
the most successful season in the history of
the school. Under the leadership of Coach
Dwane Morrison, the Jackets set several
school records. The best win-lose record in
the history of the school was posted, and it
was the first year that an Anderson team
ever reached the state finals in Columbia.
Meeting two AAA Lower State finalists, the
jackets were defeated by the Dreher Blue
Devils, but they defeated the Florence Yel-
low Jackets to gain third place in the AAA
Basketball Conference.
Much of the Jackets' success was due to
the excellent following and support which
they received throughout the year. In Spar-
tanburg the Andersonians' following so out-
showed the local supporters that the news-
papers of neighboring cities gave consider-
able space to the fine spirit displayed by the
jacket fans.

The Anderson Yellow Jackets completed their most successful

the Jackets have progressed steadily for the three years of his

The 1959 Anderson Yellow jack-
ets ended the hustle of spring sports
with a magnificent record in base-
ball by chalking up a 11-4 in the
win-loss column. Under the able
leadership of Coach Carroll Emory,
the battery overcame such foes as
Spartanburg, Greenwood, Green-
ville, and Parker! Players to come
back this year are Kirk jordan, Bill
Moore, Jimmy Spake, Keith Thrash-
er, Buddy Epps, Larry Harbin, Ter-

Patterson, and Joe Osteen, among
others. All indications show that
this year's lineup under Coach
Priester will be just as impressive
as last year's, which placed second
in the Piedmont Conference.

Anderson's track squad, under Coach Bob Patton, ended its regu-

coming in fourth state-wise. Competition was extremely keen in all
events, but the Jacket Cinder men represented Anderson well and
were rewarded generously for their long practices and tireless efforts.

With the return of four lettermen to our team, the golf season
ended with great success. Several tournaments were entered,
and in all cases our school was well represented by the outstanding
