From a frustrated beginning, they demolished one ball club after another. And in the end they annihilated their greatest rival in history, Parker High School, of Greenville. For the audacious lads of Coaches Ralph Jenkins and Jack Ross, the season was probably the best in the school's history, and one which the players will never forget. With one sweep of a somewhat magnetized hand, Coach Jenkins drew to him the best crop of high school football players South Carolina has known in a long time. The success of Boys High's l95O team could be accounted for by the monopolizing line play of those seven "mules" and their subs, and precision-like maneu- vers of the backfield, and the team spirit which prob- ably will never be surpassed. RALPH JENKINS Coach lf Tll3XlLlL... JACK ROSS Assistant Coach ln the beginning, the chances of the Jackets' surviv- ing even a mediocre season were practically obscure. And to mention the fact that they were the potential state champs would be like telling someone to plug up a dam with a picket fence-it was actually an impossi- bility, according to the authorities who were getting paid to train the up-and-coming champs. The team produced, among other things, a great crop of stars which were recognized throughout the state. "Tubby" Jones, who along with "Gif" Thompson, captained the team, and Johnny Tice, represented the school in the annual Shrine Bowl football game. All-State members of the squad were numerous. Several of the bigger newspapers in the Southeast named their All-State squads, included among the selections were: "Tubby" Jones, Dan Castles, Johnny Tice, "Gif" Thompson, John King, Joe lvester, and Don King, the latter being the master mind of the situation. He was named captain of several of the star-studded elevens. But the greatest of all honors came to Jones, the co-captain. He was named to the All-Southern eleven, thereby becoming the first Anderson lineman in history to receive such an honor. wav fb '37 X 'U -5' 9'i,,,. 1 uf N 5' X , I iw A.. x 4 Y. Chester stole the show before their home town folks. They walked off with the first half and led at that point, I2-O. The Jackets were perplexed and bewildered. What Coaches Jenkins and Ross told the boys during the intermission is unknown, but when they came back in the second half it was a different story. The Jackets took charge and never let up. And with one minute and thirty seconds remaining, BHS scored the tying touchdown. That made it I2-l2. Back to the kicking position bounded "Lord" Tice. His kick, that won the game, was a short, dumpy little thing like the lad himself, but it was as clear as a beam of light. And when it sailed through the up- rights, one wondered whether or not that stadium could stand the stupendous cheers which resounded from the Anderson side of the field. Spartanburg couldn't stop the Jackets, who now seemed destined for something greater than just a "great" season. The Tide was swept under, 26-6. The Jackets won, 39,0. the game being played in a steady downpour of rain. Then came Homecoming. 'Midst the preparations, there would have been gloom galore if everyone had only known what the big day really had in store. The sponsors were presented to the students at Boys High during the morning celebration and that night during the half, "Tubby" Jones and "Gif" Thompson crowned pretty Peggy Evatlt, Football Queen of l95O. But the beauty of the situation was overshadowed by the dismal attitude whicg resulted when Gaffney played heads-up ball and held the Jackets to a I3-l tie. The Jackets bounced back like the champions they really were. Parker High, perched high up on the list of "unbeatables" for so many years as far as Anderson could be concerned, was playing host to the "game of the year." And that it was. The Jackets surprised practically every one of the l2,000 persons present when they shellacked the once proud, undefeated Tornados of Parker, 2l-O. lt was the last game, and a more beautiful end could not have been written if it had been composed by the immortals of literature, I QT?
