Kind and devoted, he taught his students in a
way that won their respect, admiration, and love.
He invariably thought of others before himself and
dedicated himself to his work, the mathematical
education of the younger generation. He was always
willing to give students help in their times of need
and assisted many of his former students with their
problems. We, at Anderson, are indeed fortuncrte
to have had Mr. Christy as a member of our fac-
ulty. It is to the memory of this great teacher that we
dedicate our 1957 Andersonian.

ANDERSON BOARD OF EDUCATION
The ,Andersonian has provided a panorama of school achieve-
ments and growth since 1930. The current year is one of the most
important in the development ot Anderson High School since l93O,
the year ot the initial consolidation ot the one room schools. Some
emphasis is devoted to current growth and development in this issue.
More than a year ago consideration was initiated concerning
the advantages to all that might be realized through a combination
ot the Anderson and the Newton School Districts. Both Boards of
Education made independent studies ot the proposal. A series of
ioint board meetings were conducted. Early in 1957 the Boards ot
Education reached agreement that the merger would be advanta-
geous to both districts.
The proposal was presented to the patrons of the communities
through the newspapers and at meetings ot the various organizations
ot the communities. The new district became effective on April 3, l957,
by action of the County Board ot Education. Members appointed to
serve on the new board of education are Mr. Judd, Mr. Wright and
Mr. Graf from the Anderson Board and Mr. Burger and Mr. Muhl-
berger from the Newtown Board of Education. lt is due to this
development that the Board members and administrative personnel
of both districts appear in this publication.
This new school district, developed through consolidation with
Newtown, is the major educational advancement in this area since
i929-30. The i957-58 enrollment will probably exceed 2700 pupils.
The district will have a tax duplicate ot about S33,000,000. The
educational program is being expanded to improve the educational
opportunities ot the boys and girls. Conditions generally are improving
steadily. Our schools are receiving the recognition iustitied by supe-
rior educational achievement attained through a good educational pro-
gram, growth to a desirable size, financial ability and a willing
public.
We thank sincerely the people ot this comminity tor their support
and encouragement in these developments.

To the Seniors:
It was but a few short years ago that you were
toddling off to school as beginners, You have come
a long way since then, but, in many respects, you are
still beginners. This applies equally well to those of
you who next year expect to be college freshmen,
apprentice tradesmen, or student nurses. Your search
for knowledge should be iust as never ending as was
the search for the Holy Grail. The experiences you have
acquired in school are truly an arch to build upon in
the future. Your prosperity and happiness will be tied
to the goals you set for yourself in life. Be zealous in
your efforts to acquire the respect and admiration of
all with whom you come in contact. To do these things
is but to assure you a place in the niche of time and
in the hearts of men.

Our nation is based on democratic principles,
therefore, we, as Americans, feel that each member
of an organization should be represented in the
governing of the organization. At Anderson our stu-
dent body is represented by our Student Council. The
membership of this group is composed of the elected
representatives from the various home rooms and
of club presidents. The Council discusses every type
of problem that arises-anything from conduct in the
cafeteria to student-faculty relations. By its efforts the
Council has made Anderson a better school for
future classes.

The Lantern is so namecl because it sheds light
upon our school activities. Because of the ingenuity
ot the co-editors and their adviser, new features
have been added which arouse interest and provide
subiects for conversation. The reporters not only do
their school a service, but also receive valuable
training in iournalism. We take pride in the Lantern
as one of the finest papers in the county.

Our Y-Teen group is one ot many such organi-
zations in the high schools of America. These clubs,
branches ot the Young Women's Christian Associa-
tion, are devoted entirely to teen-age girls. Y-Teen
members seek to enrich their own lives and to do
their share in building a better community through
the YWCA's Christian purpose: "To build a fellow-
ship ot women and girls devoted to the task ot
realizing in our common life those ideals of per-
sonal and social living to which we are committed
by our faith as Christians. ln this endeavor we seek
to understand Jesus, to share His love tor all people,
and to grow in the knowledge and love ot God."
The Anderson Y-Teen Group attempt to attain an
understanding ot this purpose and to carry it out
in their daily living through such proiects as the
making ot Christmas gifts tor children in hospitals,
the visiting ot various hospitals, and the contributing
of Hnancial aid to the charitable work of the YWCA.
