2. Commander Iohn A. Read n California, Virginia, and Rhode Island before entering the U.S. Naval Academy in 1973. HG was graduated and commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1977. In his initial sea assignment 1978-81, Commander Read served as Weapons and Engineering Division Officer billets aboard USS Chicago QCG 115 USS Carpenter CDD 825 d US , 5, an S Coral Sea QCF 435. From 1981-84, he was assigned as an instructor of seamanship, navigation, and sailing at the U.S. Naval Academy Upon Graduation from Department Head School, Commander Read served as Weapons Officer aboard USS Brook CFFG ll from 1985-86, and as First Lieutenant aboard USS Frederick fLST 11845 from 1989-90, a part of the first Amphibious Ready Group on scene for Operation Desert ShieldfDesert Storm. . C From 1991-94, Commander Read was assigned to the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations QOPNAV5 in Wash1ngl0I1f D' ' as head of, Officer Policy and Programs Branch under the Di t ' ' ' A rec or of Naval Training QN75. Following that tour, he attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces graduatin ' M Commander Read resided i , g in ay 1995. In Ianuary 1996, Commander Read assumed command of USS Anchorage CLSD 365. Commander Readwaas awarded a Master of Science degree in Management Information Systems from George Washington University 1n'May 1994. He also holds a Master of Science degree in National Resource Strategy from the Nauonal Defense Umverslty m,1995' Ccimmfmqer RQHCVS PSrsonal decorations include the lXleritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, and various campaign and service medals. 'i f 'eff f' ' ' -f f The Anchorage insignia fon the front coverj portrays both the origin and meaning of her name, including the reason for her existence and depicting that she is the first of her type in a new class of Dock Landing Ship. The Latin term Sui Generis is literally translated to mean of a particular kind or first of a class. It is the first ship to be named after the largest city in Alaska, Anchorage, which is represented by the star on the map. The ship's mission is to embark, deploy, and land elements of a Marine Landing Force in an assault by Helos, Landing Craft, Amphibious Vehicles or by a combination of these methods.
