COMMANDER 1.1. BROWN UNITED STATES NAVY COMMANDER THOMAS J. BROWN, IR., USN COMMANDING OFFICER In 1971, Commander Thomas I. Brown, Ir. enlisted as a Quartermaster during the Vietnam Conflict. Subsequently, he served on USS SHENANDOAH QAD 181 and USS KAMEHAMEHA QSSBN 6421 before attending Officer Candidate School in 1973. Commissioned in 1974, Commander Brown served division officer tours on board USS DAVIS QDD 9371, USS RI- CHARD E. BYRD QDDG 231, and later as Engineering Officer of USS TRIPPE QFF 10751 and USS IWO JIMA QLPH 21. I-Ie served as executive officer on board USS CARR QFFG 521 and as fleet scheduler and assistant surface operations officer with COMSIXTHFLT forward deployed at Gaeta, Italy on board USS BELKNAP QCG 261 and later USS IOWA QBB 621.
