ji- USS Anchorage LSD-36 IRAQ-PAC 1 December 1990-30 June 1991 Our lives were changed forever when we left the pier that day, would we ever see our families again or make it through harms way? With uncertainty in our hearts into history we did sail, to help Kuwait, a country far away on a mission we could not fail. It was the 17th of January the Mother of all battles had been born, the President ordered rockets fired Desert Shield became Desert Storm. Saddam the fool as he spoke his mind had been awaken from his slumber, we had become what Schwarzkopf wanted the lightning and the thunder. A month and a half of intensive bombing the ground war lasted but a 100 hours, that's all we needed, that's all it took to topple him from his tower. Victory was in hand with that we could be sure, but the date of our return home felt like a sickness without a cure. Although we suffered a tiny price whenever duty calls, we'd do it again in a heartbeat for liberty and justice for all. -YN2 Darrell Wong
