CLASS WILL
Friends, Classmates and juniors, lend me your ears.
I come to bury this class, not to praise it.
The evil students do live after them,
The good is oft interred with their bones.
So let it be with this class! The Faculty hath told you this class was Ambitious: ----
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath we answered it!
Here, under leave of Teachers, and the rest, ----
For the teachers are honorable men, and women!
So are they all! All honorable men, and women!
Come I to speak at this class' funeral.
A It was my friend faithful and just to me,
But the Faculty says it was ambitious
And the Faculty are honorable men and women
It hath brought many championships home to Anahuac I-hgh School
Whose contests did the school coffers fill
Did this in this class seem ambition
When that the poor student failed this class hath wept
Ambition should be made of stemer stuff'
Yet the Faculty says it was ambitious
And the Faculty are honorable men and women
You all did see that many times in school the class presented
With a chance to study hard whlch it did many txmes refuse was this ambition?
Yet the Faculty says it was ambitious
And sure they are honorable men and women'
I speak not to disprove what others spoke
But here I am to speak what I do know
You all did love this class once not without cause
What cause witholds you, then, to mourn for it?
O Judgment' thou are fled to brutish beasts
And men have lost their reason' Bear w1th me
My heart IS in the coffin wlth thas class
And I must pause till lt comes back to me
But yesterday the word of this class might have stood against the
school now lies it there, and none so poor to do it reverence '
But here's a parchment w1th the seal of the class of 1953
I found it in the closet, 'tis its will'
Let but the commons hear this testament
If you have tears prepare to shed tnem now

CLASS HISTORY SENIORS '53
It was the 9th day of September 1941 a calm peaceful autumn day, radlant w1th the sun
shrne ofhope, cheer andjoyous prom1se,that the good slup Anahuac Qgh School stood at anchor
atthe wharf of a new school year It was the same old sh1p that had carr1ed many passengers to
safe harbor 1n the Land of Great W1sdom, but th1s day was a gala day xn 1ts hrstory, and many
people gazed upon It 1n wonder for It was rumored that they were about to set sa1l over new and
1lI'lU'led waters ln quest of the FOUNTAIN OF PERFECT UNDERSTANDING Only elght of the
crew that started on th1s voyage stayed w1th the sh1p unt1l the end As the Captam of the sh1p
we f1ndDav1d Gau lus love for f1sh1ng has stayed vnth h1m through the years The porter of the
boat, the cute l1tt1e blond, who had trouble f1nd1ng a bunk long enough, our own Jim- Bob lackson,
destlned later to become the f1rst Pres1dent of the Student Councll of A H S L1ll1an Watson,
apretty brunette whose only outlook rn l1fe IS to become marrred to a sold1er became the stewardess
ofthls great sh1p No mlcrophones orradxos were needed on thxs voyage because hir! LEE House
was aboard Deck Hands wereky Portrer, that gemus of a baseball player and future Presxdent
ofthe Sen1or Class, Drew Wxlhams Charles ohnson a t1m1d qu1et llttle fellow was placed 1n
the Crow's Nest, of course he took h1s dog along Another deck hand was Bud leoffroy the Capta1n
of all Football Captams After Bud got aboard the sh1p steamed away from the wharf and out of the
harbor
As the voyage contmued mto the second grade, the crew took on then' most popular and well
beloved boy Charles Gmdrey Charles had scarcely completed the task of placmg hrs s1gnature
upon t.he sh1p'sreg1ster when a second compamon came aboard The sh1p was 1n an uproar because
Lucllle Jomed Mary Lynn 1n telllng the world what a wonderful trme they were hav1ng
Inthe fourth grade, the boat stopped to p1ck up one who has been so proud to become one of
the crew, yours truly Zora Belle Maddox
Inthe frfth grade came Gylene W1lcox, who dazzled us wrth her charm and beauty as a future
Duchess to the Neches Rrver Fesnval
Inthe S1Xth grade we welcomed a new boy who had come from a d1stant Clty to take passage
w1th us We peered over hls shoulder as he wrote hrs name and were we surprlsed to f1nd hls name
wasGeorge Brown We had heardofthrs young man's pranks, so whxle we lcnew we would not f1nd
hxm overly fond of study,we were sure hrs nature would br1ghten for us many an otherw1se gloomy
hour He IS a track star that we can pred1ct w11l some day go to the Olyrnpxcs
luamta McM1l1an was found drxftmg 1n the sea the same year Each year we were afra1d we
would lose her because of her grades She later became valed1ctor1an
In the seventh grade we were glad to welcome a new member of the faxr sex, Georgla Nell
McDowell She has proved to be a fnend to all and 1S qtute mterested rn speech and dramaucs
The slup stopped agam the followmg year but not of 1ts won accord there were plrates 1n
t.he sea It seems and Dm Sm1th were go1ng to rob the sh1p of 1ts treasures, but wuththe
help of Charles johnson's keen eyesrght, the boat survwed These boys made a few bargams and
were permxtted to cont1nue w1th the crew They had Bert Harbour ned to the bottom of the1r boat
for future use rn case they got hungry but Bert objected and was unt1ed I-Ie Jomed the crew and
later marned one of our guls before g-raduatlon
We not1ced at the outset of the voyage that the stream upon whrch we had set sarl was com
paratwelynarrow and sheltered, but usmg our f1eld glasses we could see water ahead The Captam
explamed to us that the voyage of Hlgh School Lrfe was ln realxty to be over four seas, tho the
four bodxes of water were so closely Jomed together that they seemed but one sea He mformed

us further that we had entered upon the frrst and smallest of these wh1ch was called Freshman
Sea Here we made several stops Teddre Q, who 1I1ed to drown all the grrls the bram of the
class, along wrth a boy who swelled the ranks of ath1et1cs, Dub Wlutley, jomed us 1n thrs narrow
sea Ted -Klg the most famous p1tcher Anahuac has produced hopped aboard th1s same year
Maya lo Lew1s, who 15 a good all round person rn all act1v1t1es Jomed us here too She had
a hard mme talkmg a certa1n r1ce farmer rnto asklng the b1g questlon so she decxded to rema1n
on the sh1p unt1l further notlce
The tenth grade brought Edd1e Loggms the unpred1ctable Nad1ne Crocker, who 1mmed1ately
changed her name to Harbour
As we enter mto the SeaofAuthor1ty, ou.r jun1or year we f1nd last but not least, a sweet l1ttle
blond il Cather1ne Shu-ley She lost no t1me 1n captunng one of the deck hands
On th1s voyage were naturally a few cases of seas1ckness and varlous ones were tempted to
throw up algebra and geometry and other drsagreeable d1shes and toss some of thexr best belong1ngs
overboard 1n t1mes of rough seas but the stewardess assured them calmly but f1rmly that they
would only have to consume these 1nd1gest1bles over and over untll they were perfectly dlgested
and so they bravely managed to hold them down
It would take too long to read the complete log of th1s eventful voyage It would be very
rnterestmg to tell the many delxghtful exper1ences the many wonderful lessons the changes 1n
the passenger 11st at the var1ous ports along the way the partrngs from th1S one, and the welcommg
ofthat w1th the why and the wherefore of lt all but after all, It has but l1ttle v1tal s1gn1f1cance
except to ourselves the few who strll rema1n together to land at t.he commencement wharf We
must not devulge the secrets of our sh1pmates We must not forget the loyalty due to our class
colors so valrantly flymg at the masthead The best and most vrtal lustory of any person or thlng
IS never glven to the world So must lt be w1tl1 the Class of '53
It has been a most wonderful voyage and we have accumulated many souvemers from every
port st1'1v1ng however to guard agamst the danger of excess baggage, and of takmg unto our
selves anythmg wh1ch would not be of SCFVICC to us on the greater voyage of Real L1fe upon wh1ch
we are two weeks from ton1ght to embark
We have not faced any gale wh1ch we were not able to w1thstand We have not been wrecked
upon the Shoals of any threaten1ng task The t1des of our averages have contmued to ebb and flow
The waves of math problems have kept up therr ceaseless motlons and commot1ons The b1llows
of exam1nat1on questlons have sometlmes tr1ed the1r worst to overwhelm us but none of them
has succeeded We have been able to procure the necessary passport at the entrance of each
succeedmg sea and have been able to pay the pr1ce rn good hard work for every port of the passage
We have sympathlzed w1th the seas1ck passengers that made up the var1ous new classes We have
enjoyed the successful exper1ences of those who have landed on other shores
Now we look atthe larger, more majestrc ocean ahead and feel that our experlence has frtted
us to withstand every storm and weather any opposmg force w1th no fear of drsaster
Roll on,thou dark and deep blue ocean Roll' Ten thousand fleets sweep over thee 1n va1n '
But not 1nva1n tl1e class of '53' We w1ll go on wr1t1ng new logs of greater adventure, and yet more
wonderful d1scovcry, for wh1le the voyage of I-hgh School L1fe 1S at an end, the Voyage of Real
L1fe IS Just now and here at 1tS Tnumphant Commencement'
