ANAHUAC 12 - LIBERTY 12 - SAME OLD STORY
ln the season's opener, a young and untried band of Orange and
Black Panthers battled aheavier and experienced Liberty Elev-
en to a 12-12 deadlock on Kyle White Field. This was the third
straight year that these two neighboring rivals have battled to
a 12-12 tie. Anahuac scored first late in the initial quarter
when Charles Guidry, quarterback, found his team mate, George
Brown, waiting in the end z one all by himself - Guidry threw,
Brown pulled it in, and the first touchdown of the 1950 season
had gone into the record book for the Panthers. With Chipman,
Liberty's brilliant, all-district, triple-threat, chunking and run-
ning, Liberty went ahead by s c o r ing in the second and third
quarters. Both conversion attempts failed. Taking over on their
own 20 yard line late in the fourth period, the Panthers marched
methodically down the field fo r the tying counter. With only
seconds left in the game, Lester Hargrave, the Panthers hard
d riving right half-back, rammed over from the 1 yard line
jd
The try for extra point was no good.
PANTHERS UPSETS THE DAYTON BRONCOS 7-0
ln their second encounter, the Panthers surprised all of South-
east Texas by downing the pow e r ful Bayton Broncos 7-0 in
Bronco Stadium. With the starting whistle, the Panthers sank
their fangs into the game favorite Broncos with relentless fervor
that never slackened until the final whistle. After battling the
Broncos scoreless for three quarters,l-Iargraves broke loose
from the 25 yard line, and behind perfect blocking scored the
game's only touchdovsm. Hammond split the uprights for the
extra point. The Panther defense was virtually a wall of gran-
ite, holding the highly touted Mr. Glenn Pruitt and Co. to a
mere 26yards rushing and 6 yards through the air. The Panther
g round and aerial game netted over 200 yards, and kept the
Orange and Black threatening mostof the night. The victory was
costly for the Panthers as they lost their pass slinging quarter-
back, Guidry, midway in the first quarter with a broken collar
bone.

Injuries, fumbles, and a fired up band ofBuffaloes, brought the Panthers their
first defeat of the season in a non-conference go on the visitors field. While
the Panthers outgained their foes they could never get going when it was needed
most. Lester Hargrave s broke loose twice for long gains only to see the
Buffs take over on recovered fumbles. Nurnber 39 will never be forgotton
in Crosby for his vicious defensive work.
PANTHERS - BOBCATS IN DEADLOCK
The Panthers and the Hull-Daisetta Bobcats battled to a 7-7 tie in bruis-
ing, head-knocking game on Kyle White Field, in agame that was doped
to go a long way in deciding a district champion. The fir s t half was a
scoreless affair which featured a rock 'em, s ock 'em brand of football
which had both teams groggy by halftime. The Panthers took the second
half kick-off and were never halted in a downfield ma r c h that covered
58 yards. From the 15 yard line, Perry Smith d rove off tackle for the
first score. Billy Hammond booted the extra point. The Bobcats lost no
time in evening the count and drove 55 yards to paydirt to even the count.
- Hall, giant Bobcat fullback, paced the attack. Both te ams played their
i hearts out in the fourth quarte r but neither could muster the power to
I break the deadlock.

PANTHERS 20 - HORNETS 0
ln a penalty-loaded contest, the Panthers plucked the stingers
from the Harden Hornets on Hornet Field to the tune of ZO-
O in a district fr ac as. Halfback Lester Hargraves picked
up the first counter in the late stages of the second quarter
in a fast stepping 45 yd dash to paydirt. Capt. Dave Wallace
scored the second P anthe r tally in the third qu art e r by
smashing into the secondary on an off tackle play and racing

PANTHERS ROUT EAGLES
The Panthers' scoring machine went into mass pr oduc tion forthe first time ofthe year in
trouncing their ancient rivals, the Barbe r s Hill Eagles, 33-O on Eagle Field, The Panthers'

yards unchallenged, Billy Hammond kicked the extra point. Capt. Dave Wallace scored the sec -
ond tally from the Eagles' 5 yard line, and a few plays later drove over for his second talley. Ham-
mond's kick was good. Perry Smith climaxed a Panther drive in the fourth quarter with a plunge
over the double stripe to give the Panthers their fourth touchdown. Hargraves set up the final
score with a pass interception and a r unback to the Eagles Z0 yard line. Wallace scooted the
final 10 yards for the score. Hammond's kick was again good.

Playing their annual Armistice Day game in the Buc Stadium before a small, shiver-

Buccaneers 34-13 to r e main undefeated in district play. Perry Smith scored first l

PANTHERS 19 - WARRIORS 13 - DISTRICT CHAMPIONS
Heads-up, alert football and a do-or-die team spirit enabled the Panthers to upset the
dope bucket and knock over the highly favored Sour Lake Warriors 19-13 for the Cats
third straight District Championship in one of the most thrilling games ever played on
Kyle White Field. The Warriors scored first in the first quarter as a result of a re-
covered Panther fumble and apower-house running game. The drive covered 42 yards,
The Warriors quickly returned the favor by fumbling on their own 12 yard line, and the
Panthers los t no time in scoring as Lester Hargraves ripped off tackle for the entire
distance. In the second quarter, a beautiful Warrior pass play put the Purple and Gold
out in front of the Panthers 13-6. The second half found the Panthers coming back with
new life, and after recovering apartially blocked Warrior punt on the Sour Lake 30 yard
line, Lester Hargraves broke loose to the 1 yard line.Capt. Dave Wallacep romptly
carried over to bring the score 12-13, With only three minutes left in the game, Billy
Hammond recovered a Warrior fumble on the Panther 10 yard line, and like a mighty
sandstorm roaring our of the West, the Cats began to move. With Capt, Wallace, Perry
Smith, Hargraves, and Pete Walker literally blasting the Warriors' line to shreds, the
Orange and Black juggernaut r olled unchecked. Capt..Wa1lace going the last 15 yards
which meant another championship for the Panthers.
