SUMMARY "One of the greatest teams ever to come out of AHS" is the tag labeled on the Seahawks of 1956. Loser of only one game through the twenty game schedule, and champions of the Northwest League for the third year in a row. the 'Hawks went. on in post-season tournament play to win three games which accomplished for them their second straight District championship, ln the first round of league play the Seahawks swept through undefeated and rang up a winning streak of seventeen before meeting their nemesis. the Burlington Tigers to whom they lost in a close one. 67-63 at Burlington. However, the Seahawks came back after tasting defeat with two resounding triumphs over Snohomish and Sedro Woolley. This year's squad was the first team since 1947 to win 20 games or more in one season. The '56 crop won 22 with games in Seattle yet to be played, The Hawks, in scoring 1279 points in 20 games passed the scoring record set last year of 1137. The team free throw per- centage of 65.89'i broke previous records. Individually, records were set also: Jack Higgins' 32 points against Snohomish broke the record of 29 held by Duane Cully '55, Don Daniels' point per game average of 14.-15 broke previous record of 14.18 held by Jack Symonds '50. Orville Breckenridge 181.15023 set free throw percentage standard held by Don Sullivan 179.390 r, '47, Don Daniels was placed on the All-District Tournament team Gary Plummer and Orville Breckenridge were members of' the second five picked by circuit sportswriters. So, the Anacortes Seahawks, victors over Bellingham and Everett three times. Burlington and Blaine once, and the re- maining members of the Northwest League twice, represented the Northwest District as team number one at the State tour- ney March 14-17. This was the Taylors third trip to the Big City in as many years. The Anacortes second team won 16 of 20 with Keister, Fox and Guthrie leading the way. ij! 5' fl .:'I,l' ,',5i'?r . .., x 5 f ' if . -.f t t 4 -xii. 1 ' fl 35 Q57 ' h f 51,2 f X. , 6 i fs: F' s '25, - r' ' ' l 1 'ir .H ' A ' - .fi Q' ,, - ' " . 1 'A if '1 " - :I , 1 I. .V N 1, ,UI 47' 'Y ba' ' . . - s AHS AHS AHS AHS AHS ' AHS AHS AHS AHS AHS AHS AHS AHS AHS AHS AHS AHS AHS AHS AHS D wi AHS AHS AHS AHS SEASON'S RECORD 59-47 Edmonds 68-52 Bellingham 56-40 Marysville 60-43 Lake Stevens 45-44 Everett 67-41 Mount Vernon 84-79 Bellingham Cotl 57-53 Arlington totj 65-60 Burlington 68-43 Snohomish 58-55 Sedro Woolley 53-45 Edmonds 65-56 Marysville 71-37 Lake Stevens 65-54 Everett 51-50 Mount Vernon 58-49 Arlington 63-67 Burlington 87-59 Snohomish 79-54 Sedro Woolley District Tourney 56-55 Blaine 54-44 Bellingham 60-56 Everett Scoring Average 1449-1182 Opponents For 63.00 Against 51.39 Won 22 Lost 1 Sponsored by Brown Bros. Clothing 2"-2-. sg .. if , ,Sui 'M""Ni-4, The desire and hope of all here at Anacortes was realized on Friday, March 9, 1956 at 10:15. For on that date, the Anacortes Seahawks had annexed their second straight Northwest District Basketball crown which sent them on their way to the annual State Basketball Tour- nament. This seemed to become a matter of fact occur- rance as the team along with many loyal fans were mak- ing their twelfth appearance in Hec Edmundson Pavilion. Anacortes drew Garfield as its first foe, and avenging the '55 tourney defeat. trouneed the Bulldogs with a late game spurt. 56-38. The following day the relaxed Hawks led all the way and with a phenomenal shooting perform- ance wore down the Lewis and Clark fivesome 68-52, On the third day after two straight wins, the Sea- hawks were in the semi-finals with the Highland Scot- ties, and in a battle of little giants the Hawks again won, this time 63-60. On the final night and the night which determined the State's number one high school basketball team, the Seahawks came out second best, but not without making a very good showing and tossing a real scare into the Lincoln Lynx. The Hawks started slow and were down five points at intermission hut staged a fourth quarter drive that brought them within four, 58-54. But a Lin- coln stall drew fouls from the pressing Seahawk five and the Hawks went down to defeat, 68-58. Even in defeat, the fine delegation of high school athletes represented their school and community magni- ficently. The second place finish, recorded by this year's fine squad, is the best on record for Anacortes. The hon- ors won individually by the team members were: Don Daniels, All-State, All NVV District, and All NVV Leaguel Orville Breckenridge, 3rd team All-State, 2nd team All NVV District, and an All NVV League selection: Bob Bar- cott and Jack Higgins, Honorable Mention in both state, and district: Duane Cully an All NVV League choice, and Gary Plummer, Honorable Mention at State and 2nd team All NW District, and also an All NW League choice. A fact which was very instrumental in the fine per- formance ot the team was the strong bench displayed by Seahawks Jack Clark, Albert LeMay, Gary Keister, Dave Balthazor, Brian Courtney and Rod Studley. They pointed out the fine team effort which accomplished so much. This group of fellows, many of whom could have played regularly on any other team in the league, had to be satisfied with bit-parts. Approximately 3000 townspeople met the victorious Seahawks at Sullivan's Corner the following Sunday to show their appreciation for a job well done. Thoroughly unexpected, but long to be remembered by the team members, was the impromptu welcome which turned into a civic affair. A procession of horn-honking well-wishers made their way down Commercial Avenue with the bas- ketball team and coach in seats of honor. The motorcade stopped at the post office where a crowd of 1000 heard the individual remarks and thanks from team members and coaches. Surely on that day the AHS basketball squad men were the number one citizens. The Elks held their annual Basketball Banquet, April 10, a successful affair. Movies of the championship game with Lincoln and the memorable "Homecoming" were shown. "Hee" Edmundson, the former U. of W. bas- ketball coach was the guest speaker. As a result of local contributions each squad member was awarded a trophy for his part in the tearn's more than successful season. Duane Cully was awarded the Anacortes American Inspirational Award and the team presented Coach Tay- lor with a plaque awarded in presentation. And so to a team which displayed amazing team- work, and a never die attitude, wonderful sportsman- ship and a desire to win which served as fine representa- tives of their school, community, and district and which accomplished much in many respects, this supplement is dedicated.
