It should bring to a focus these activities, both curricular and extra-curricular, and, we hope, will bring to the students of Amundsen High School a distinct pride in the school's accomplishments and add to that intangible something, for want of a better name, called school spirit. This is Amundsen's first yearbook-we have undertaken its publication with the sincere hope that we have justified the responsibility placed upon us. Here are other organs that go hand-in-hand with this type of publication. The news- paper, to present the current news, a magazine, to present literature or other depart- mental materials and, a handbook, to supply information on school regulations and ideals. Another year will probably see the yearbook displaced by one or two enlarged and bound editions of the newspaper, one with special literary articles and another featuring the photographs and history of the seniors. We feel that if Chicagois youth is to be educated at the expense of the Public, that such education should revert to this same Public in the form of intelligent and useful citizens. We seek to present Amundsen High as a concrete and forceful part of this great educational effort,-the beauty of its building and campus,-its faculty and students-a place where boys and girls work, develop, and live--with each year a life within itself. The appeal of the book may not be so great to the owner at the time of 'ss it will be in future years when he picks it up and recalls old days d old frien Here is the first Viking: we hope you like it! I Few high schools in Chicago can boast of both a modern building and a beautiful campus. Amu'ndsen's campus is the largest of any city high school. The park commission has bestowed on us extensive use of the surrounding grounds, an aid that has proved invaluable for athletics and pleasure. One does not see the campus in the summer as frequently as during the rest of the year. However, after viewing its beauty in spring or fall, it is a vision hard to forget. The campus is the pride of the students. Their respect for it is profound, and the acclaim of it widespread. l xf- , m LL - f.f.fvaffvO k , , , j Mvv 0 5 if A-5- L Y g V . L ,K , J f-g i 4 , ' i xg. Forty-three students received the hrst diplomas given by this high school. The change of high school dis- triets brought students together who had no previous acquaintance, making it difficult at first to become organized. The commencement began with two selections by the band. Our chief executive, the Superintendent of Schools, XVilliam Bogan, gave the main speech of the evening. fl 4 .I Page I3 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS 0k Edward Scholl Joseph ein Prvsidcnl i Viet'-Prcsidrfzf Arthur Speaker Y W Mary Lawrence Treasurer ' Spprf-fury CLASS HISTORY One of the cherished compliments, paid to the second class to graduate from Amund- sen high school, which shall always be remembered with pride, was the administrative body's statement that "if they could receive as much response from the future 4A classes as they have from the recent, they would indeed be fortunate." Fully realizing the sincere compliment bestowed upon them, the Seniors have earnestly tried to live up to it and keep it with them until their very last hour among their classmates and teachers. The three years of public school training has proved itself worthily many times over by the one hundred and forty representatives of over six prominent high schools of Chicago. The fact that the boys and girls were entering upon their Senior Year Qsupposcd to be the happiest and most pleasantj in a newly established Senior high school did not phase their much nourished ambitions Qsaved for their senior yearj or cause them to become discouraged because of lack of activities and sponsors. When a movement was started for an organization, it was the Seniors who stopped to Consider its possibilities. When the organization took shape and began to progress, it was due to the loyal cam- paigning and support of the Seniors, with all due respect to the faculty and advisers whose co-operation has been duly appreciated. We know the administrative body will expect just as much from us after we grad- uate as they did before, so it is very confidently that we inform them that if, inside of twenty years, we do not blossom into a big bouquet of foreign diplomats, members of congress or the senate, one or two nosegays of philosophers, world wide lecturers. physicians, dentists, lawyers, and last but not least of all, a hard laboring professor or teacherg we are going to come back to Amundsen and begin all over again. Arvid Ekblad Trc'ax11rf'r CLASS HISTORY Being a member of the 4B class is rather like finding one's self in a temporary lull before a storm. It is that brief restful interlude immediately preceding the excitement and the flurry of being a 4A. When one reaches his Senior year his high school life is almost at an end. Whether it has been a success or failure depended entirely upon him- self. Then a Senior either feels a complete satisfaction when he looks back over his high school life, or a deep sense of shame if his time has been spent to no avail. One of the greatest thrills in life is being a senior. It is the uppermost position of upper-classmen. In 4A most students try to Hnd time to do just what they've always desired to do and never had time for. Therefore, in 4B they begin checking up to find exactly what these things are. Before the 4B there still lies the thrill of class election, class prom, and graduation. The 4B class is extraordinarily organized. Following in the footsteps of the 4A's they have elected class officers and found a real leader in their president, Jack Cogan. Because of this, Amundsen expects much from this class. They have succeeded this semester. Should not their success be even greater, the next? Page 24 Leroy Anderson l.llllC .md lT0lllC- I-'x1re111eiyl11'igl11. During their sophomore year they whole-heartedly took part in the various school activi- ties. Now, as Juniors, a wider field of opportunities, of which they readily take advan- tage, is open to them. In their ranks are many potential football, basketball, swimming and track stars. Also, in their midst are many up and coming writers who work on the "Log"g many singers who use their vocal talents in the chorusg and some promising actors and actresses who employ their dramatic abilities in the drama class. If they continue as they have started, and there is no reason to believe they won't, equal at least, and perhaps surpass all previous classes. 7 I . F , , I .
