Core Classes Inspire Excellence here were seven main subjects in which all students had to par- ticipate. They were English, math, health, science, social studies, physical education, and HRXSSR. This year the English classes initiated Great Books Discussion Techniques , Mr. Sapp's classes did autobiographical posters, and critical thinking skills were emphasized. The science depart- W 2 ment had fun this year. In addition to it's regular curriculum, Mr. Mackie started a new Science Club. In P.E., Ms. Gault taught a new girl's gym- nastics unit, and Mr. Steimling initi- ated a LaCross unit. In social studies, we had a new current events unit. In the health classes, we studied about three important health areas - drug abuse, mental health, and human growth and development. The ma department continued their usual e cellent program. During the HRXSS time, a new Peer Tutoring progra was started, the homeroom i termurals continued, and a speci homeroom was formed to produce tl school newspaper. These main subje areas were the core of Amphi's ol standing curriculum. l. Mike Dekeyser, Todd Turney,and Chris Tay- lor dress up for a biography oral report in English. 2. Tera Thomas and Kellie Rife talk about the rules for being a good tutor in Peer Tutoring. 10 x. Ag. 3 3. Aeridy Williams and Kuuleme Williams care- fully work on a Science chapter. 4. This was the first year the yearbook had color pages and was taught as a separate class. The Arena newspaper was also produced in a special homeroom for the first time. The orchestra played in 2 the Grand Canyon State Band and Orchestra Festival, the Delta League Festival, and four school concerts. The ' Ml I I .Wm r.Wm,,.. , , tee l. Anjelica Cordova and Sarah Finchum work on their yearbook body copy. 2. Staff members work hard in publications. 3. Julie Quisenberry and Candy Everill check out the latest copy of the Arena. isdom 87-88 chorus and ensemble performed at AJHS and the Rillito Center, the Dis- trict Choral Festival, and the Delta League Choral Festival. They com- bined talents for a spring musical, and fifteen ensemble singers went to Phoe- nix for a SolofEnsemble contest. In addition to it's regular fall and spring concerts the band played at an Al-IS football game and participated in the Delta League Festival and the Pima County Fair.
