Awpk RcMei Ftfv King Oat} . M JBartin Luther King Jr. ' s day ilfl was extraordinary this year I at Amphi. Unlike many other schools, Amphi High was required to attend school on January 19th, 1987. Many students felt that this holiday should be spent in workshops or in marches expressing their rights of American citizens and learning about others who have done the same. Another reason that Amphi wanted to protest was newly elected Governor Mecham ' s decision to rescind the Martin Luther King Holiday. Students felt that it was necessary to speak out and therefore began to plan a sit- in, in the little theater. Princiapl Dan Alberts felt it necessary, after meeting with students, to represent what the student body wanted. Therefore the sit-in was expanded to work- shops and a rally to include the whole student body. Planning and organization of the event took hours, instead of months, with the cooperation of the students and the administration. Monday, January 15, 1987, the plan was set into motion, students took part in group discussions with guest speakers and participated in a peace rally. Even though the holiday ' s activities weren ' t entirely planned by the students for the students, most felt it was time well spent. Suzanne Teichart and Joanna Carichner get involved at the rally. m. «•») -• Jtls ? ■-. • ■, ' if - y M fi- ' ■ ' . - ' ■ ' -. Iti fit em. I A hat s here? On January 1 1 16th, Tucson received two W w inches of snow. Everywhere you looked, cars, lawns, and even roof tops were covered with it! The foothills had more snow than the rest of Tucson. Students arrived at school with best winter attire and every hair in place. By the end of the day everyone looked like they had been through a blizzard. Students got here ready to bomb their friends with snowballs, but once the tardy bell rang, snowball cease and class began. It was torturing to walk into a warm room after being exposed from the freezing weather. Everyone had to be aware of where they walked during passing periods so they wouldn ' t slip and fall as some students found out it was hard trying to open the lockers with frozen fingers. The temperature was unbelievable, and it continued to snow throughout the whole day. Some parts of Tucson even received snow on Saturday. The weekend was very cold and most of the snow had not melted until later on that week. It was a lot of fun while it lasted. Making snowmen and having snowball fights will just have to wait until it ' s here again. Chris Mahan is ready to bomb a fellow friend. F
