NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Membership in the National Honor Society is based on Character, Service, Leadership, and Scholarship. Officers are Joyce Gideon, President, Mary Fries, Vice-President, Joyce Thurston, Secretary, David Butler, Treasurer, and Lillian Cooper, Faculty Sponsor. Each year the Keeling Chapter of the National Honor Society presents a scholarship to a junipr to enable him to finish his high school education. An award is also given to the outstanding freshman, To raise money for these projects, Honor Society sponsored a film of the Thanksgiving Day football game with Tucson High. New members of the senior class were initiated in February, while junior members were initiated in March. In May there was a banquet for the graduating members. 100 s

To Rg Dick Dlddams, Gideon Weisz, Bill Tllllngthast, Robert Riley, John Da vis, CHESS CLUB Tucson, Amphitheater, Safford and Morenci organized a state chess championship as the main project for the ye'ar. The first half of the State Tournament was held at Safford, in early December with the fol- lowing scores: Amphitheater 13, Tucson 10, Safford 9 1!2, Morenci 3 112. In March, the second half was played and the score determined the state champion. Tucson won 9 1X2 to 6 1X2 over Amphi in the first meet between the schools in February. Two other matches were played. The officers were Princess. FILIBUSTERS The Speech club known as the Filibusters under the direction of Mrs. Lillian Cooper, sponsored the school oratorical contest which was held on February 18, 1953 and the district oratorical contest on March 5, 1953. Five gold pins in the form of gavels were awarded to the five students who achieved the most in public speaking. Officers for the first semester were Mark Latham, President, Charles Sallaway, Vice-President, Jeanette Nelson, Secre- tary, and Carl Foiles, Parliamentarian.
