Junior High Student Council SEATED, FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: A1 Wiygul, Vice-President; Mr. Burrow, Sponsor; Sam Creekmore, President; Jurney Davis, Secretary-Treasurer. STANDING: David Halbert, Joe Frank Peeler, Johnny Leech, Mike Kendrick, Ray Harris, Elizabeth Creekmore. The Student Councils are organizations composed of students elected from their respective classes to lead and govern the student body. To be a member one has to have a C or better average in scholarship and a B or better in citizenship. The Junior High Student Council is composed of nine members. There are two representatives from the seventh grade, and three representatives from the eighth grade, one of which is the vice-president. The four members from the ninth grade include the president. The Senior High Student Council is also composed of nine members. There are two representatives from the tenth grade, and three representatives from the eleventh grade, including the vice-president. There are four senior members, one of whom is the president. The purpose of the Student Councils is to encourage and to co-ordinate student activities. It attempts to boost the morale and school spirit through sponsoring social activities and promoting the ideals of good school citizenship. Aiding in drives, campaigns, and other similar phases of the school program also plays an important part in the Councils' work. The Student Councils of this year are to be congratulated on the fine work which they did. Without them and their work, our school system could certainly have not run as smoothly as it did. Their help and understanding was appreciated by the entire student body. 25

C. Thompson, Sponsor. NOT SHOWN: Kathy Williams, Vice-President. The National Honor Society is an honor club composed of juniors and seniors. To become a member of this club is possibly the highest honor a student can attain in Amory Junior -Senior High School. The honor society is based on service, character, leadership, and scholarship (with emphasis on scholarship). The student installed must have a 90 or above average, with no single yearly average under 85, unless an extra unit has been taken with a grade of 90 or above average received in it. The names of the members are placed on a national roll in Washington, and are recognized by all colleges and high schools. The National Honor Society is sponsored by the National Association of Secondary Principals. The Amory chapter was chartered in 1960. 26
