Varsity Basketball Row 1, Left to Right: J. Mazes Row 2: J. Wilson, P. Fields, R. Voliton, K. Commerce, S. Washington, Coach Schmitt, J. Williams This year's Varsity Basketball team coached by Mr. Jack Schmitt finished the season with a 12-7 overall record. The Warriors placed second in League V. After loosing the non-league opener to Copiague, the team found difficulty in the Christmas Tournament. Since there were only four men returning from last season, there was much work to do. The team worked with different combinations until they found the winning one. As the league season opened they were ready to go. Before the season was over they proved their strength and accomplished several firsts. With a good victory over Islip the Warriors were ready for the second week of league play. Possibly too ready for when Sayville came to Amity we let them take home the victory. It was then made clear to the team that as the rest of the week would go so would the season - it was all right there. Amity traveled to Harborfields and showed the fans that they knew what they wanted. At Harborfields they played Amity basketball and showed them their first defeat 83-75. Next was Babylon on the home court. Amity was ready and two time Long Island Champs Babylon fell to defeat. Lester Mays scored the last minute basket to put the game in overtime which he and Jim Wilson ran very successfully. Probably the most remembered game of the season will be the Wyandanch game on the home court. Both teams needed the game for the playoffs and second place. Wyandanch felt it had edge for they had beated Amity twice. Amity was ready for they wanted to be in the playoffs. The Amity Warriors played the game of the season with the final score being 110-95. It was the first time in years that an Amity team scored over 100. It was by far the most exciting game in many a year. Andy Voliton scored the basket which put Amity over the 100 mark. The following week Amity met West Babylon in the playoffs. The game was held on their home court and they outplayed the Warriors. Kai Commerce and Keith Little were named to the All League team. Kai was the season's high scorer, while Jeff Williams led the team in rebounds. This season Amity enjoyed having great depth on the bench for the second team was every bit as good as the first. Lester Mays, Andy Voliton, Peter Fields, Ray Howell or Jeff Mazes came from the bench many times to fill key spots and pleased the coach and the fans with their outstanding performances. With the rebounding of Jeff Williams and Jim Wilson, the ball-handling of Keith Little and Peter Fields, scoring of Kai Commerce, Jeff Williams and Keith Little, and the defensive play of Voliton and Kapp Nicholson, Amity proved to be a winning team. This combination was assisted by the off-the-bench rebounding of Ray Howellg scoring and defense of Andy Volitong scoring of Lester Mays and outside shooting of Jeff Mazes.
