Cheviot In one way or another each member of the forty-two man squad of the '76 Football team made a contribution to the total cause. This team had its troubles yet like all Amityville teams they put it together and became winners. Each player who put on a red and gray jersey also took on the responsibility - one based solely in pride. The season started with a non-league loss to East Islip followed by a league loss to Babylon. Before the East Islip game Tom Cheviot was given the jersey 4231. His reaction was that it was something he really wanted and when you knew that your teammates voted for it and were behind you, you have a feeling of satisfaction and belonging. In the season opener against EI Gallo and Voliton were chosen as game captains. The game started off fairly close, with both defenses operating in high gear, and remained that way for most of the first quarter. Amity then lost control when the offense fumbled and made way for the opponent's first touchdown. Tom Cheviot scored two touchdowns of one and four yard runs. Dwayne StThomas also highlighted the Amity day as he scored on a blistering eighty-five yard punt return late in the first half. In the second Ted Mathis struck with a devastating eighty-five yard romp on the kickoff return. East Islip, however, came out on top of the 36-28 score. The ensuing week with Dwayne Meadows as captain, the TIDE played a charged up Babylon team. The game was dictated by defense on both sides. Amity had its chance to score late in the first half but was stopped by the clock. The TIDE ended up on the short side of 6-0. With the defensive line, composed of Scalise, Struble, Sheil, Fullan, Egan, and Watkins, creating hugh holes, Amityville shellacked a weak Port Jefferson team to start the winning season. In the game Ted Mathis replacing an injured Tom Cheviot at number two back did a spectacular job. Mathis took full advantage of the opportunity as he rushed for three touchdowns and rushed for 186 yards on twenty-one carries. Mathis also intercepted a Port Jeff pass and carried it into the end zone for still another TD. Amityville won 37-0. Next Amity traveled to John Glenn, the defending league champs, where the outcome was 19-18 despite one of the most awesome defensive lines in all of Suffolk county. This line was comprised of left tackle 6'4 Tom Cheviot, left guard 6'2 Chris Cannon, right guard 6'1 Rob Ebner, and right tackle 6'3 Jesse Little. From this point on they relinquished only 33 points. The TIDE though was quite acrimonious at its inability to complete a two point conversion which would have won the Glenn game. Amity had a shot at the Glenn game very near the end when Camacho dropped a perfect pass from StThomas on the five yard line and the drive was stalled. Amity bounced back and handed previously unbeated East Hampton an overwhelming defeat. Dwayne St Thomas took the opening kickoff and streaked 87 yds. down the right sideline for the first score. On the ensuing kickoff Roy Voliton recovered a mishandled kick on the East Hampton twenty-seven yd line. It took them just three plays to score as Pescitelli hit St Thomas with a perfect
