lt was a season of ups and dovims for the MLS wrestling squad as
our matmen fought their way to fourth place in the Southwestem
Conference. Despite a strong start, injuries, ineligibility and other
problems kept the Comet wrestlers from a possible second-place
finish in the conference. After losing live senior starters to injuries
or other circumstances, the team still sent three wrestlers to the
Class AAA Regionals and took fifth place at the Brecksville Tour-
nament. Chns Russo came out of the season with an outstanding
record: 26 wins and only 4 losses. Chris was the Conference
Champ in his classification, as well as the District Champs and
Lorain County All-Star. Chris also set a new school record: 1.52
takedovms for the season. Other outstanding accomplishments of
the wrestlers this season were: Bob Benson, 5rd in the confer-
ence, 2nd in the district, and Lorain County All-Star, with a record
of 18-9: Greg Saultz, 35rd in the conference and Lorain County All-
Star, 22 and 4, Rod Davis, 2nd in the conference, 5rd in the
district, Lorain County All-Star, 22-11, Alex Turner, 5rd in confer-
ence, 10-101 Bill Clark and Mike Wargo, 4th in the conference.

The JV squad followed in the varsity's wake by
turning in an outstanding season of 18 wins and
only 2 losses, for the best record ever. The fu-
ture looks bright for these players and for our
future varsity seasons: after all, if they can play
like this at the JV level, just think what they can
do as varsity players! Some season highlights:
scoring 81 points against South Amherst: allow-
ing only 26 points to Vermilion: shooting 54-Wo
against South Amherst and 76010 free throws
against Olmsted Falls: pulling down 50 re-
bounds against Bay. Jim Caims was voted "Mr,

seniors, the girls still managed to set two
school records: the single game scoring re-
cord, Julie Titchenell's 57 points against Fair-
view, and the season scoring record, Missy
Welte's average of 11 points per game. Their
season's high point was their 40 point victory
over Fairview: but this was balanced by the
loss of Karen Green for theseasoni due to
injury. Julie Titchenell received the MVP

This last year in Amherst was for me, and I can say this without any
doubt in my mind, one of the most interesting and enjoyable years
of my life. When I first came to Amherst I was quite prejudiced
against America and did not expect too much from this year. But
the Amherst people changed me and my views totally! I was im-
pressed how friendly the people here are, and how well they treat
foreigners. But the best surprise was my family. I lived the whole
year with the Howells and enjoyed my stay here very much. For me
it is like a second home, where I like to spend my time. I had a
great year in Amherst and I want to thank everybody who helped
me during this year, whether it was in school, sports, or anywhere
else. But special thanks again to my family, they made this great
year possible for mel By the way, I was really impressed how a
name can amuse so many people for a whole year! So Ciao .......

for me. I attended JVS and LCCC at
the same time. Thanks to all my

been just great. I wouldn't have
missed this year for anything!

Well, my experience as an
exchange student is quickly
coming to an end. This past
year has been one I will nev-
er forget. I have tried many
new things and I especially
enjoyed going to the basket-
ball games and being on the
track team. The Christmas
dance was an experience all
its omm! Maybe I won't have
another chance to spend
time as an American stu-
dent, but I will visit America
someday again! I would like
to say thank you very much
to my American family the
Bauers and my friends and
teachers. I can't understand
English that well but they
helped me a lot! I will miss
you all!
Love.

To the students at MLS:
This year was really great for me. I made a lot of friends
and had a lot of fun with them. I have a lot of great
memories to hold on to until I can come back for my
class reunion.
I'm going to miss all my friends and especially David and
Cierrie Rice, my American parents with whom I had a
great time. I wish that I could take all my friends home,
so I expect all of you there!

Visitors For A Year, Friends

I had a very nice stay in Amherst and
in Marion L. Steele. All the people
were nice and my friends in school
always helped me when I had trouble.
Even when the school was totally dif-
ferent than in Germany, I had a lot of
fun. I had a great time with the tennis
team even when we were not so suc-
cessful. I want to thank everybody I
met here for the fun I had.

Hi!
:,,' K
Well, this is the end ofthe best year in my life and I'm sad because I'm
leaving soon. This year has gone by so fast! Probably it's because it
has been full of awesome times. Everyone here has been extra nice to
me all the time - my friends, my family, and my teachers. I have
discovered really different activities and habits totally new for me, like
Halloween, Homecoming, Easter, Christmas dance, Prom, school
dances and games . . . those are some memories that I'lI treasure
forever.
Everything here is so different from Spain, and I love it here. I could
keep writing about all my great times forever, but I don't want you to
make another yearbookjust for my American life. So, I guess I should
finish this letter saying thank you Tricia and Tracey for being the
"bestest buddies" in the world, I'll never forget you guys. We were 01!
lWho were the dorkiest ones? Ha, Hall I also want to say a big thank
you and I love you to the Dunlap family. Last but not least, thanks
Mark for being you! I don't like to say goodbye, so this is a "see you
soon" because such a great relationship can't be broken. I'll look
fonlvard to coming back as soon as possible.
Love,
Veronica Florez
P.S. Call me Ronnie for "short".
Living in Merida, Venezuela is a dream come true for me. Leam-
ing the language has been a rewarding challenge thanks to my
family and friends who have been so helpful and friendly. I have
leamed appreciation for things I've always taken for granted -
communication, family, friends, and my country fthe food, or-
ganization, conveniences and modernizationi. The school is so
different from Steele in many aspects. The students are fun to
be with and we leam from each other. lYes, they cheat too!! My
adventure has given me so many places to see and things to
do. I've been mountain climbing in the Andes, swinging on
vines in the rain forest, swimming in Lake Maracaibo, and on
the highest and longest cable car in the world. The time goes
quickly and my year will be over before I know it. As my very
good friend and fellow AFS student in Merida from Massachu-
setts said, "It is not that the AFS year in itselfis the best year of
your life - but possibly the most worthwhile in how it improves
your appreciation of all the following years - the rest of your
life." And I agree 100 percent!

It was a lovely day for a wedding -
but in the Media Centerl?! Oh, well
. . . it was just pretend anyway.
Staged by the Home Ec. lll class,
the mock wedding was all ar-
ranged, planned, and acted out by
members of the class, with some
help from Cleveland Tux, Zilch
Florists, Ted Jacobs, and Mr.
Spieker as the "Clergyman," who
pronounced the couple married by
the "authority of the Bureau of Mo-
tor Vehicles." Well, let's not be too
picky: any authority is better than
none!
Right: The Wedding Party: Darrell
Cirimmett, Denise Szabo, Sean Butch-
er, Groom Sean Byrne, Chris lioclger,
David Gray and Denise Sterling.
Where's the bride? Below: "C'mon,
dear, l know his family is bunch of
bums, but Sean's a nice young man,"
mother of the bride Faira Francis
seems to be saying to father of the
bride Rudy Fontanez. Below right:
Bridesmaids Denise, Chris, and
Denise.
Right: "Plow you
may kiss the bride
....."ButSean
doesn't seem to be
taking this serious-
ly! Far right: "Yes,
we like each other
. . . . no, we're not
going to act like
mothers-in-law,"
says Lisa Provi-
dent lmother of
the groomi and
Faira.
