Amherst, the Sandstone Center of
the Wox'ld, is celebrating its one hun-
dred twenty-fifth anniversary this year.
To this vicinity, three miles south of
Lake Erie and thirty-two miles south-
west of Cleveland, the first settlers
came in l8l4.
One of the outstanding attractions
of the town today is the Old Spring.
This natural spring was the center of
the first settlement here in Amherst.
ln one hundred twenty-five years the
community has grown from a few
houses grouped around the spring to
a settlement covering an area of three
square miles, inhabited by more than
three thousand people.
The first settlers were of New Eng'
land and Pennsylvania stock. Today,
the inhabitants of Amherst represent
twelve or more of the nations of the
world.
To Amherst, "Our Town", the Re-
cord Staff of Amherst High School
sincerely dedicates the Annual of
I939.

The first schoolhouses in Amherst
township were one-room log cabin
buildings. One of these buildings was
located on South Ridge: another was
built just beyond the corporation east
of Amherst: and a third was establish-
ed west of the village. These log
cabin structures' date back to I823.
When the log schools became in-
adequate, the old Town Hall, a frame
building twenty-five feet by thirty-five,
was used as the educational center.
Typical fixtures of these first schools
were wood stoves and rough slab seats.
ln l856 was erected the first brick
schoolhouse, a three-room building
two stories in height and twenty-five
feet by forty. This school, which was
built at a cost of thirty-two hundred
dollars, was located on the present
school site, on land given by Judge
Josiah Harris, one of Amherst's first
settlers.

ln the first half of the nineteenth
century, the one-room school was di-
rected by one teacher and a board of
trustees. The first teacher in Amherst
township was a woman: history shows,
however, that at a very early date a
man instructor was employed at one
of the log cabin schools.
A teacher was not required to have
any normal trainingg many times he
had only a grade school education.
Later, in order to qualify for a teach-
ing position, he had to be certified by
passing a County Teachers' Examina-
tion.

ln the log cabin one-room school
house were assembled boys and girls
ranging in age from five to twenty.
These pupils were not grouped accord-
ing to classes and then promoted at the
end of the term. Each pupil studied
lVlcGuffey's First Reader until he com-
pleted it, and then he began the Sec-
ond Readerg in this way sometimes
there were eight or more reading
classes a day and only one or two
pupils in some of those classes. All
the pupils studied reading, writing,
arithmetic, and spelling, and a few boys
and girls added geography and gram-
mar to their course of study: grammar,
however, was considered a girls' sub-
ject in the early days.

ln pioneer days, extra-curricular
school activities were limited in num-
ber. Friday rhetoricals occasionally
gave to boys and girls an opportunity
to speak a piece or to sing a song.
There were no organized athletic con-
tests: students received their physical
exercise by manual labor, by long'
walks to school, and by such games as
hide and seek. Spelling bees, night
penmanship classes, Friday programs,
and the annual picnic were the only
diversions offered by the school of yes-
terday.

SPEECH DEPARTI Er
The Speech Department has been very active during the season of
i938-39. The first event was the Prince of Peace Declamation Contest held
on November l l in which nineteen people participated. The winners, Rose-
mary Radde, Lois Ehlert, and Alma Masters, represented Amherst in the
County Contest at Oberlin, where Rosemary and Lois won first and second
places. Rosemary! then represented this district at Cleveland.
ln December the Speech students assisted the Music Department in a
Vesper Service, their part being group readings from the Scriptures. With
the music organizations they also presented a Christmas pageant, "He Came
to Bethlehem." ln April, members of the class gave an Easter pageant.
Early in the year the class competed in the AAA safety contest sponsored
in our section by the Cleveland Automobile Club. Esther Sprenger's manu-
script was among those chosen by the club for presentation. On january 28
several members of the Speech Department went on the air over WCLE, the
first Amherst High School group to do any broadcasting.
Four members of the class, Betty Braun, Edna May Lehman, Marjorie
Lawrence, and Rosemary Radde took part in the Northwestern Ohio Speech
Tournament held at Port Clinton, rating very well with the judges and bring-
ing honor to A.H.S.
The outstanding event of the year was the presentation of the "Charm
School" on March 26 and 27 at the Town Hall.
The last productions of the year were three one-act plays by several
juniors in the class.
ln the course of the year, several members of the class attended the
Hanna Theater. Two trips were made, the first being for the purpose of
seeing "Knickerboclcer's Holiday" and the second, "Kiss the Boys Cuoodbyn.
We feel that the Speech Department has had a very successful year.
