Class History Twelve long years ago about forty boys and girls straggled into the front entrance of Amherst Public Schools to begin the long and by no means easy task of acquiring an education. At that time we bore no resemblance to the present class of '33, We were as- signed to the supervision of Miss Kuss ClVlrs. Powersj and lVliss Beller, and it is from these two well-liked teachers that we learned our ABC's. ln the second grade our class pass- ed on to Miss Hollingsworth flVlrs. Smith, and Miss Barnes, and so again to the third grade to Miss Kaser flVlrs. Maxwelll and lVliss Holzhauer flVlrs. Springerj. Here many pupils from the country schools joined us, and with these additions, we set out to mas- ter the catchy problems of multiplica- tion and division. ln our fourth year our class was diminished by the deser- tion of several students who began their studies at the St. josephis Paro- chial School. ln this grade we showed our business ability by participating in the Old Paper Contest. Then in the fifth grade, due to the insistence of lVlr. Powers, we enlarged our vocabu- laries by using the Winston Diction- aries. Since our studies had become more complicated, our three years in junior high were more difficult. The prob- lem that gave us the greatest opposi- tion was that of cube root, which was explained by Mr. Powers by means of his blocks. Also, in our junior high years, we became journalists, and pub- lished a newspaper, with the assistance of lVliss Yealy. Proudly and ignorantly we enter- ed high school, where our members were increased again by the return of the deserters from the parochial school. Our class officers were: Fred- erick Wilhelm, presidentg joe Beres, vice president, Velma Brooks, secre- tary and treasurer, and lVliss Spellman, class advisor. One of the main fea- tures of that year was a party at Leon- ard Cool-:'s home, where, in spite of the rain, all had a good time. Fur- thermore, as freshmen, some of our students attended a ,scholarship con- test at Ridgeville, but they were too modest to win any first places. ln our sophomore year, under the leadership of joe Beres as president,

1933 l rcd1-rick Willxcliir as vice president, Myrtle lfranklin as secretary-treasurer, and Mr. Butzberger as class advisor, we began saving money for the Junior- Senior Reception. Meanwhile lfleanor Papworth came here from lflyria and caused many of the boys' hearts to miss a beat, and incidentally their grades to lluctuate. ln our junior year we elected the following officers: President, Willizxm Andrews: vice president, Roy Bren- neng secretary and treasurer, Flora Sa- hiersg and a new class advisor, Miss Murray. That same year we were lucky to include Doris Gaehr from Brooklyn, N. Y., as a member of our class. An important event was the -lunior-Senior Reception which we ar- ranged as a Hollywood First Night. ln this, our final year, we have been expertly guided by our class offi- cers: Arthur Thomas, president, Carl- ton liodmann, vice president: lfileen lfinnegan, secretary-treasurer: and Miss Murray, class advisor. Of our original number, only twenty-six remain: Ralph Stark, Harvey Albrecht. Clay- ton Guild, Carlton Bodmann, Foster jenne, Willzird Mengel, Melvin Fred- :-rick, Roy Schaeffer, Wm. Andrews, Melvin Reichert, Arthur Thomas, lr- ma Mathes, Frederick lfbbs, lfileen l'iinnegan, Flora Sabiers, Phyllis Sa- lmiers, Marie liranlilin, Frances Tisdale, Karessa Meitzke, Ruth lfhrman, Flor- ence Herhst, Margaret Kovach, lis- ther Kreeger, Rose C-robe, Herbert l uhrman and Marie Lange. May first, we were much saddened by the death of james lnnes, one of '33s most bril- liant students, and our friend and classmate for IZ years. Now, as Commencement draws near, we are working on our final dra- matic production, an operetta, uMiss fiherry Blossom, in which Marie Lange has the title role. Uur struggle for an education, at Amherst, is almost ended, but cur his- tory is not. Many of us will seek fur- ther for an education, the rest will enter other fields of endeavor, but the Cilass of '33 with its motto, Honor lies at laboris gate, will continue to make history for itself and its mem- hers.
