A LETTER TO OUR PUBLIC
Dear Readers,
Can you feature a yearbook Without a plan? We'll answer that for you-No.
Every good Workman starts at the bottom and Works up. VVith that tried
and true maxim in mind the '55 staff decided to feature feet,1 and all We ask of
you, Dear Reader, is that you get in step.2
Graduation gives us that footloose and fancy free3 feeling. At last we are
out from under the footq of slave driving adults. We are nearing maturity
Where it Will be our privilege to put our own foot down5 and also our aim to
keep our feet on the ground? How Well We do in the future will depend on the
toe hold7We get early in life and the conscientious footworka we practice as we
progress.
Seriously, though, it has become so crowded at A. H. S. that weire practi-
cally stepping on each other's feet, and we think our situation is very much
like that of the old Woman Who lived in a shoe.. We have liked the old shoe,
however, even if it did pinch at times.
Happy reading!
The Staff
1There's dirty work-a-foot!
2Get on the ball.
3Playing footsie.
4We're sick of feeling like heels.
5Before we put our foot in our mouth
6Footprints on the sands of Time. '
7And keep on your toes!
8No place for cold feet!

Administration
Dear Teachers,
Someone has said "the bigger the feet the better the under-
standing." We appreciate the fact that you have such big feet
and, though in our weaker moments We may call you "flat feet,"
We must admit they are always pointed in the right direction.
We owe a great debt to you for helping us to keep our chins up and
our feet on the ground.

Class of '55
Dear Classmates,
,Tis said that some people have a finger in every
pie, and as for feet ,tis said Cby usb that this class
has had its foot in every feature of school life.
It has shown good footmanship every step of the
way, 6455 inches worth to be exact, and it is our
hope that every member may leave his "footprints
on the sands of time."

55 Superlatives
The Class of ,55 believing itself comprised of a group of superlative young people asked its members
and some of the teachers to name the most outstanding individuals in the following categories. The
voting proved an almost impossible task, and it was with great difficulty that the recorders could tabulate
the results and settle on only one boy and one girl for each of the following:
One who has done the most for the class
Most pleasing personality
Most promising
Most efficient
Quietest
Most Talkative
Cutest
Best Looking
Wittiest
Best Mixer
Best Athlete
Best Dancer
Best Dressed
Best in Dramatics

Underclassmen
Dear Undergraduates:
Though the Way be long and the path rough,
don't get cold feet, and you too will graduate
someday. Though you become Weary and foot-
sore, don't hesitate, for he who hesitates is lost.
Get a good foothold now and the rest of the climb
will prove less trying. Remember the footlights
of Amherst are upon you.
Paternally laughing up their sleeves,
The Seniors

S CLASS OF '56
The class of ,56 entered into this year's swing of things
with gusto - Pop LaCroix standing by to help out in
i emergencies. With one year of experience in A. H. S.
X behind them, the juniors put their heads together and
began Work! The traditional cake auction was held
providing fun and food for everyone. Thinking ahead
l to the future, the juniors had two paper drives to raise
,ir :gi money for the senior reception, at the same time keep-
ing their next year's Goldbug in mind. The class of ,56
has given A. H. S. lots of pep and school spirit. They
have not only done things for their class, but are eager
to help out the school. Their class is represented in
both boys' and girls, athletics. They have been active
. .... in music, art, drama, and studying. "Growing Pains,"
the Junior Class Play, reflects the true spirit of the
class of ,56 in the co-operation, fun, and hard Work that
Went into it. We are confident that next year the
class of '56, leaving assembly first. Will be completely
filling its role as leader and setting a good example for
the underclassmen.

A CLASS OF '57
This year as every year another class entered A. H. S. to be viewed with a mixture of suspicion and hope
by the old timers of one and two years.
The freshmen have begun their high school career with enthusiasm with the help of Bliss Fillmore,
their class adviser. To get things rolling, the class of '57 raised their class dues. Shortly after this,
various committees were organized: one to select the class ring, and one to decide upon next year's tradi-
t tional Junior Class Play. The Freshman class has added to the good school spirit by taking part in
athletics, twirling, cheering. They have added to the cultural interest of A. H. S. in the form of art and
M' music.
In the next two years, we, the graduating class of 1955, know that the freshman class will continue
their good work and be an asset to A. H. S.
Now, after many months of observation and associations, we are able to bestow high respect and
praise upon the class of '57, knowing that our school will be left in good hands.

Instead of being an independent newspaper this year, the Gra-
phic had a page in the Amherst-Journal Record every three weeks.
The arrangement was a full page with no ads and two pictures.
Therefore, there were no expenses except additional pictures.
These expenses were paid with the money made selling refresh-
ments at the basketball games.
The assistant-editor is chosen by the faculty advisor and the
staff consists of anyone interested.

Gussie Fishel, Judy Domina, Trudy Markert,
and Mary Wentworth accompanied by Miss
Johnson, represented the club at the state Tri-
Hi-Y conference in Pittsfield in March.
Thanksgiving food baskets and a toy collection
were the projects of the year.

Blow Your Own Horn
The operetta "Blow Your Own Horn" written by Kenneth McKillop, a former A. H. S. Music Director,
was presented by the Music Department two nights in December to raise money for band uniforms. The musi-
cal, written especially for high school students, was a fast moving, hilarious comedy and was well performed
under the direction of Dr. Schuler and Mr. Perrone. The extremely attractive sets were the work of Miss
Rafferty and art students.

Dear Athletes,
We've heard that brawn and brain and strong
feet go into making Winners on the court, the
diamond, the gridiron, and the track, and, of the
three, it's the athlete,s foot that gets the most care.
Yet, when it comes to spirit, no athlete's a heel.
It's the player who,s on the ball who makes the
sole of a Winning team.

The McDonough men of the gridiron fought their way
to a winning season as they compiled a -1-3 record. The
team was severely handicapped by a lack of numbers and
each man was forced to become adept at many positions.
The hard-charging although light Amherst forward wall
Opened wide holes for the fleet and shitty backfieldmell-
Clever ball-handling and needle-threading passes to the
ends and a down-field halfback led the offensive thrusts.
The Hurricanes had not only the ability to split the middle
but skirt the ends as in some games an exceedingly large
number of yards was compiled. The defensive strength
Seemed to come in the backficld with the vicious tackling
and timely pass interceptions. The main credit goes to
the fighting seniors for this successful gridiron seHS0Il-

The Hurricanes climaxed a successful season with the
Hampshire League title and a Western Massachusetts
Tournament bid. The early season question marks were
erased as the team developed into a smooth working unit
under the coaching of Alex Johnston. Pitching was
Amherst's strength as the Hurricanes could send to the
hill either of two experienced pitchers.
The infield played
good ball under pressure and over the course of the season
turned in numerous Helding gems. Fine play behind the
bat and in the outfield and de d b
pen a
le clutch hitting were
other important factors which helped to give Amherst the
Hampshire League title.
