THE CLASS

Seated: B. Thelin, vice president, Mr. Oliver, ad-
visor, E. Vondell, secretary. Standing: R. Garvey,
president, R. Kamensky, treasurer.
The juniors have a class to be proud of. They initiated a welcome-
back assembly this fall that will no doubt become a practice from now on
in A.H.S. A hard working class they began, early in the year, projects
for financing the '54 Goldbug. The school will not soon forget the hilarious
cake sale held in November with cakes made by faculty members and bid
in by students.
The juniorspdid a fine job of acting in their class play, "The Late
Christopher Bean."
The seniors feel it is safe to leave the future of A.H.S. to the juniors
and their advisor, Mr. Oliver.

Every year a new class enters A. H. S. to be viewed witha mixture of sus-
picion and hope by the veterans of one year and two years service. Will the new
members run rough shod over the traditions and practices believed in by the old-
timers or will they carry on? Now after months of association, we, the graduating
class, are able to admit praise and respect for the class of '55, knowing all will
be safe in their hands.
The ninety-one beginners made themselves felt in several activities and par-
ticularly in sports. They formed nearly the entire second string of the football
squad and in basketball the JV's ran up an amazing string of victories. They
were active in music, debate, and on the Graphic as well. Their school spirit
was excellent and they evinced cooperation and originality in their class dance
held in the spring.

T TRI-S
,,glb!r,.
.LL
As usual, Tri-S started offwith its quaint and color-
ful custom of initiation. Soon after this the entire
club went to a marshmallow roast at the Radcliffe
home. Cider and doughnuts were also served.
A short time later, a group of girls went roller
skating at the Gables.
At a meeting where the annual Tri-S Christmas
Formal was being discussed, the girls mended toys
and made dolls clothes. These toys were later sent
to a Shriner's hospital.
Tri-S also held a clothing drive. The clothing
collected was sent to the Save The Children Federa-
tion.
The Tri-S Christmas Formal was a big success
as in past years. The theme chosen was that ofa
Winter Wonderland and the snowflake decorations
were beautiful. A Queen, Miss Frances Potter, and
her attendants, Martha Martin and Dorothy Colby,
were chosen and presented with bouquets.

DRAMATIC CL B
This year the Dramatic Club has
met two days a week instead of one, as
in past years. Under the able guidance
of Mr. Perrone, the group at its meet-
ings has been practicing pantomimes in
an effort to improve the members' act-
ing ability. The Dramatic Club also
plans to enact scenes from plays, in the
hope of putting on a one act play in an
assembly in the spring.

PEP CLUB
At most of the football games, home or away, was a group of loyal fans, the
Pep Club. No matter how windy and cold the weather, that group was always
there. When basketball season arrived more and more members were present
at the games, and a bus load of cheering fans attended most out of town games.
This year the Pep Club bought pins.

STUDE T COUNCIL
In its second year under Art Giannetti as president
the Student Council met regularly and acted on the year's
business. A law was enacted and enforced forbidding lunch
line cutting.
Friday evening dances after home basketball games
were sponsored by the council.
President Giannetti was elected by the group and the
Senior class to go to Boston, in March, as the Amherst
Good Government Day representative.
The choice ofcandidates for foreign scholarships was
also done by the group.
Several Student Council members attended the Coun-
cil convention at Ludlow in the fall.

PRO ERITO
Pro Merito members decided this year to sponsor as-
sembly programs of general interest rather than the even-
ing meetings exclusively for honor roll students held in
past years. They wished to share the excellent speakers
booked for their programs with an audience larger than
their club affords.
To belong to Pro Merito, students must have a total
of twenty points. An "A" counts five, "B" counts nothing,
and "C" is a minus five.
At the regional meeting in Northamption, well at-
tended by the local club, Anne Wardwell was elected
Secretary.

CHORUS
Getting off to a late start because
of special units did not hinder this year' s
chorus. With less than half the number
of members they have had in recent
years they made several appearances
during the year and were well received.
They appeared at the Jones Library and
in the annual spring festival, and sent
severalmembers to the annual Massa-
chusetts Music Education Association's
All State Music Festival, held this year
in Springfield.
Until January the club met twice a
week under Mr. Schuler, and from Jan-
uary on they met three times a week
under the direction of Bob Sacks, a sen-
ior at Amherst College.

BAND
The band, composed of both junior
and senior high students, was one of our
most active clubs this year. It could be
heard cheering the football team at both
home games and at our last game of the
year in Leicester. It'also appeared in
several concerts for the Amherst Music
League, the Parent Teachers Associa-
tion, and at the Jones Library, as well
as appearing ina spring music festival.

ORCHESTRA
Meeting twice a week the high school orchestraprepared sev-

tra. They played for the Christmas Concert at the Jones Library,
the Amherst Music League, and the annual May Music Festival.
Some of the members participated in the All-State Music Festival
in February.
Under the direction of Mr. Schuler the joint orchestra has
grown in the last few years and now has a membership of forty-
five.

PEP BAND
Under the able direction of Art Nie -
deck the Pep Band played for most of
our home basketball games. They also
did a wonderful job playing for each act
in the "Senior Circus", which was put
on in December.
The Pep Band,with fourteen mem-
bers, consists only of those who play
first chair in the regular school band,
and it includes both junior and senior
high students.

MAJORETTES
Here is one of our most active groups in school. Griginating three years
ago when we were freshmen the group has remained mainly composed of mem-
bers of our class. This year may be the end of this important group as there
are only two underclassmen majorettes.
The group twirled at both football and basketball games, at our big outdoor
football rally, and did a magnificent job at the Senior Circus.
The group owes a great deal of thanks to their instructor, Phil Jensen of
Springfield, who holds classes in Amherst once a week.

The swimming team, as this book goes to print, has
swum in three meets, all ofwhich were lost by close
marginsg however, there were some very impressive
individual victories which look promising for future
meets. Having swum Classical twice and Holyoke
once the team is picking up experience and is look-
ing forward to a more successful finish.
Special credit should be given to our excellent med-
ley relay team consisting of Bud Wheeler, Guy Wick-
sall, and George Leigh. Next year you see a new
crop of experienced freestyles, and A.H.S, will see
another good swimming team.

The basketball teams, under coaches Williams
and Mc Donough, salvaged five wins as against
nine losses in Hampshire League competitions.
The boys lost a couple of heart breakers against
Hopkins and St. Michaels.
The Junior Varsity, as in past years, came up
with a very successful team, winning all sixteen
of their games. This makes the out look for next
year's varsity team very impressive. Also re-
turning to help on squad will be veterans Bob
Garvey and Marty Joy.

PERSONALIZED PORTRAITS
And It's All Done With
Lights!
There's magic in Lights .... add a light here, place a spotlight there, and
your portrait takes of the appearance of real form and individuality.
Your Vantine photographer knows how lighting effects can be best used . . .
How easily they can reflect your personality.
Your Vantine photographer knows best how to secure the sharply etched
photograph your engraver desires of the important senior year .... The victories
of the athletic teams .... The brilliance of social occasions . . . The Prom
. . . . The plays . . . . The debates . . . . The expression of everyday life on
the campus.
That personalized portraits by Vantines are important is attested by the
fact that over 300 schools and colleges repeatedly entrust their work to Vantine.
