ERE we are again ! as the clown says in the pantomime. Positively the last appearance of ,811 in any OLIO I The clown keeps on the ghastly mask of mirth, but we all know that behind his grin his heart is sad enough. Nor can we appear here now without' a sense of sadness however gay we may affect to be. The year in which we begin to say and do things for the last time can hardly be otherwise than sad, for all the bright future hopes which may illuminate it. We look back upon the work we have done and the work we have shirked, upon the friends we have rnade, and the friends we might have made, upon social hours cheered by the mirth that lit but never burned, and solitary hours of dark and lonely coniiict, upon the successes and the disappointments of nearly four years. They are almost over now. For well nigh four years on this miniature stage we have been rehearsing the Drama which is the Doing of Life. We have gone through our parts in varying moods, from grave to gay, from lively to serene, as luck or the accidents of the hour would have it. At times, too infrequent, alas, we have taken our fworlc cm grcmcl seriemz and diligently coursed the rolls assigned us: anon, waxing weary of duty, we have indulged in an all-too-frolicsome bye-play with our fellow actors. A I As Freshmen we stumbled awkwardly through the first reading of our rolls, with little sense of the beauty or humor or pathos which might lie enfolded within the meaningless words. As Sophomores, grown glib with .frequent repetition, we rattled easily through the empty phrases, at times, perhaps, catching glimpses of the hidden meaning, of which, as Juniors, we began to have -a clearer perception. And now, as Seniors, our costumes donned, and our make-up completed, we are going through the last rehearsal. Already through the thick curtain which veils the untried world, we hear the hum and stir of a vast assembly : our hearts beat quick with anticipation, our ears ring with the plaudits or the hisses of the coming years. Success, failure, which awaits us ? The future, the future alone can tell. ' The lights are lit, the orchestra have taken then places, the audience is gathered. Draw up the curtain and let the Great Play go on ! 30
