ElGl'lTY'FlVE.. IME rolls its ceaseless course, and '85 has entered upon that year which is undoubtedly the most delightful of college life. The days of callow inexperience are past : Freshman verdancy and Sophomore recklessness have given place to the ripe self-knowledge of the Junior. Latin, Greek and Mathematics, the occupations of many years of childhood, have been put away with other childish things, and the congenial optional fills up our studious hours. The friendships and associations of the past two years are weaving their ties ever closer and closer about us, untouched by the icy fingers of a future parting. The dazzling privilege of earning our own living and paying our own debts, is as yet too distant to blind our eyes to the pleasant light of common day which now environs us, and no untoward cloud projects itself over our pathway from the past. Present friendships, present duties, present joys, fill -up our Junior days with measureless content. No longer engaged in a hopeless digging and delving amid ancient roots, we are now engaged in the culture of thevernacular, an acquaintance with which we find, unlike reading and writing, does not come by nature, and which we pursue the more gladly that it enables us to clothe the fiery thought in simple words,'l not only when we indite our Junior essays, but in those more momentous essays in composition which are among the privileges of our Junior year. For : ' - Water runneth by the mill, The miller wots not of, and the Junior oftwhiles cometh to an understanding of affinities other than those he learneth in the Lab. True it may be said--nay, it has sometimes been said, that the class of '85 is not distinguishing itself in scholarship. Be it so, there are more thin fS in colle e life than are dreamed of in the philosophy of some men. 2, Q l Who would not value a baccalaureate in the noble art of friendship, and in the genial science of goodfellowship, as of higher worth than any parchment sfmmnco cam Zcmrla of the schools? Not that we object to the latter. As Charles Lamb forgot to say, sentimentally we are disposed to a mark of five, - ' Y t th 'are though organically we are not capable of more than two. e ere J ' 25
