EIGI'l'l'Yf5IX, The Cane is Mightier than the Sword!! IGHTY-SIX is a gallant class, Zip Ra Boom! Still rather fresh, but let that pass, Hi! Hi! Hi! Hi! Hi! We were once Freshmen. One fine morning we awoke and found ourselves full-iiedged Sophomores. Our year's training had been a good one, and it proved the stuff we are made of. This stui is very heterogeneous. In this respect it rivals Greek hash. Our prayer bill includes, besides numerous gentlemen and scholars, the following elements, which give tone to the whole collection : ' . Toughies Qmore expected to develop this yearj, Orators, Dudes, Musicians, Cranks, Giants, both physical and intellectual, Pee Wees, ditto, Athletes and Lady Killers. In intensity, the latter predominate, giving a sweet iiavor to the whole mixture. As the terms and years roll by we expect to devolop new prodigies in all departments, and leave deep and large footprints in the sands of time. Already we have gained distinction. The history of the past year bears witness to the originality and independence of the class, We abolished hazing. This was our Hrst achievement. It may be called the great Reformation in Amherst'College. When we entered we brought the Reformation along with us. It was then but a tiny infant, mewling and puking in our arms. But we stuck to the side of Justice and the Faculty, and the Reformation grew rapidly, and we came out the conquerors at last. The coniiict was long and fierce, but we never forgot the unseen host, which, at every seventh revolution of the all-beholding orb, gathered away up in the hall of Athene to brew thunder and hurl its bolts upon our terror-stricken enemies. Once our tutelary divinity, like the gods of old, suddenly swooping down upon the foe, bore away the shining trophy, beautifully wrought, studded with silver nails. There was a season, when in the melcmge of angry Faculty and shoved CPD Sophornores, we, the innocent cause of all, were quite lost to view. But as the seething waters grew calm we rose to the surface and to the sight of men, victors. And so we wore the festive cane, both in season and out of season, in fair weather and foul, prizing the hard-earned privilege. Then we swore that Eighty-Seven should have the same privilege. - And they do. As gentle this fall as we were fierce a year ago, we confine our efforts to Winning the tug of war, cider, base ball championship, and so forth. 17 .

Enough of cruel Mars: now for Venus. After clubs, hearts is trumps. The victory once gained, we rule by love and not by fear. The time may come, somewhere . , . . cl 6 in infinity when our hearts w1ll be cloyed with such oceans of l3l1SS, an w 7 shall cry out : U Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples, for I am sick of love. Now its sweet iniiuence softens the asperities of the college course. Asperities are booming now. We are passing from the balmy atmosphere of fall term and Maitre Corbeauu to the rigor of winter and mind reading. We must fortify ourselves externally and internally, remember Doc's great precept, and face the music. D F
