THE Class of '65 has. at length, reached the " broad plain" of Junior 5'0f1I'- The year ly inf,-ssmge

hopes for another year. We hail, with pleasure. the rcturn of so lllfllli' 'if HUF V"l1Ulf""fH' Ullfl
only regret that necessity compels them to join classes lower than their own. Ilroff-ssor Clark.
after having won laurels for himself and for Amherst College, on many a battle Held, has re-
sumed his duties as Professor.
The admission of the new class considerably increases the aggregate of the whole Cellcsc.
so that the chapel presents amore crowded appearance at prayers, than for some time past.
This reminds us of the expected repairs and improvement of the chapel. An:-:iously did we turn
our eyes towards the tower, expecting to find that it had vanished into thin air 5-but still it
stands.
During vacation new dumb-bells, of Dr. Lewis' pattern, have found a place in the Gymna-
sium. Our first thought, upon seeing them, was, that our fair cousins of South Hadley were to
be invited here to use them 3-this seemed to be the most reasonable explanation 5 subsequent
events have thusfcuf proved it a fallacy. But. without presuming to question a thing we have
hardly tried, it does not seem possible that " muscle of iron" should be developed without the
use of dumb-bells of alike material.
The new Gallery has proved indispensable. The Physical Department, as a whole, is steadily
approaching perfection, and bids fair.to equal in importance the Gymnastike of the ancient
Greeks. - '
The past vacation has been eventful in the history of our country. We have come together
at the beginning ofa new year, full of hope for the future of our Nation. The Standard of the
Union has been every Where triumphant, and it is with feelings of deepest gratitude to Almigh-
fY God, that WG behold the steady D1'0gress of Liberty, Law and Right, advancing to complete
success. '
We understand that some of the Sophomores have already shown their peculiar characteris-
tics in their treatment of the Freshmen, and that one of the last mentioned class gave the
unequal strife, SOM his furniture. and went home. We had hoped that '66, in its treatment of
' H1059 10SS 0XD91'19I1C9dl?h311 itself," would have shaped its course according to the maxim,
" suaviter in mode et fortiter in re," by which its Own tender, years were guided
