TL he Ames High Volunteer Service, (AHVS), involved over 100 students. School volunteers tutored individual students in all grades during school hours. They assisted teachers in the classroom as well as serving as Ames High Program Volunteers. At the beginning of the year, a volunteer committee consisting of 7 students established policies and procedures. They were also responsible for recruiting interested students. Dale Tramp, AHVS sponsor, is an enthusiastic backer of the 8 year program. “There are great rewards involved here. Although students receive no credit, there is a notation placed on their permanent record, and it’s an experience they keep with them all their lives.” Volunteering out of school time was required of the Special program Volunteers. The Big Pal Project, sponsored by the YMCA, allowed volunteers to establish relationships with young pals, ages 4-14. Working in nursing homes, for Open Line, Shelter House and the Mary Greeley Hospital Auxiliary was what they were involved in. Woodward State Hospital was visited weekly throughout the year by a local church youth group. They talked to the residents and participated with them in special activities. “It was a worthwhile experience,” commented Ann Wirtz. “The people there don’t see anyone else from outside, so it’s good for them to meet us. | really enjoyed it.” Left: NEW MATH.
