TL he Ames High Volunteer Service, (AHVS), involved over 100 students. School volunteers tutored individual students in all grades during school hours. They assisted teachers in the classroom as well as serving as Ames High Program Volunteers. At the beginning of the year, a volunteer committee consisting of 7 students established policies and procedures. They were also responsible for recruiting interested students. Dale Tramp, AHVS sponsor, is an enthusiastic backer of the 8 year program. “There are great rewards involved here. Although students receive no credit, there is a notation placed on their permanent record, and it’s an experience they keep with them all their lives.” Volunteering out of school time was required of the Special program Volunteers. The Big Pal Project, sponsored by the YMCA, allowed volunteers to establish relationships with young pals, ages 4-14. Working in nursing homes, for Open Line, Shelter House and the Mary Greeley Hospital Auxiliary was what they were involved in. Woodward State Hospital was visited weekly throughout the year by a local church youth group. They talked to the residents and participated with them in special activities. “It was a worthwhile experience,” commented Ann Wirtz. “The people there don’t see anyone else from outside, so it’s good for them to meet us. | really enjoyed it.” Left: NEW MATH. frisbee contest. Even with changes and additions many Homecoming traditions- painting windows, car decorating, coronation, and decorating the players houses-were still in tact, which made for a busy week. According to Senior Dan Stump, “There was something to do everyday.” With all this how could Homecoming have been anything but a success? “It was great! said Senior Bea Van Fossen. Y HOMECOMING COURT: Bottom: Jo Montgomery, Dan Stump, Sarah Townsend, Evan Geise. Center: Queen, Julie Waters and King, Reggie Harrington. Top: Anne Conzemius, Dave Litchfield, Sam Fouad, Polly Homecoming 23 over Cedar Falls. Both cross country teams placed third at districts and qualified for state. The girls swimming team placed fourth at the Ames Invitational. Another break in tradition happened on Thursday night. The annual bonfire was moved from the parking lot to the gym due to high gusts. Along with broken traditions there were also additions. These included hush buttons, kidnapping the football players, the powderpuff game, the cross country torch, and the Spirit Slater. The addition of a king was greeted with mixed emotions. “l don't like having a king, commented Sophomore Teresa Lang. Junior Mark Jensen said, “l thought it was a joke at first but when the nominees took it seriously, it was all right. A string of eight Homecoming game losses was snapped by a 12-10 upset
