School Nurse Ever present to meet the needs of Ames High students was Miss Ruth Eeklind. our school nurse. Miss Eeklind was present in her office each morning from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 12:45 p.m. to 1 p.m. to issue admit slips to all students absent three or more days from school. Miss Eeklind also admin- istered first aid for all minor emergency cases. Eye and ear examinations were given by Miss Eeklind. who endeavored to carry out the Ames health program. This program consisted of two main points: eye. ear. and physical examinations for all students, and the checking of communicable disease in the Ames schools. Custodians Busy all day long were our three custodians, Sylvester Newkirk, Paul Sherman, and Joe Middents. They arrived at school every morning to unlock the doors and sweep the gym. They busied themselves during the day by keeping each room and hall in good condition. Many incidental jobs such as set- ting up the stage for assemblies, sweeping the gym after basketball games, and the hall after high school parties were a few of their other tasks. Making general repairs around school was also included in their duties. eighteen
